Aaron Glenn and the Saints: Smart Hire or Familiar Misstep? (merged) (4 Viewers)

No. Maybe he’ll be a better head coach then a DC. But likely not.

Dennis Allen was a better DC. Our secondary went from average to shut down when Glenn left and DA came in. Regardless of what anyone says about DA being a head coach you can’t deny he was a very good defensive coordinator. Point being, being a good defensive coordinator currently doesn’t translate well to being a head coach in the NFL any longer.

Look at Mike MacDonald. He was a great defensive coordinator for the Ravens. Even better than Dennis Allen. Yet he’s not doing so hot up in Seattle currently.

Look around the league. How many successful head coaches are there that came from the defensive side of the ball? None? 1? 2? Now look at how many successful head coaches came from the offensive side of the ball. A dozen? Almost two dozen?

For whatever reason, offensive coaches make for better head coaches in this league over the last 5-10 years.

We need a head coach from the offensive side of the ball.

Besides. Glenn’s defense is a bit overrated and is partially protected by an offense that controls the flow with Gibbs and Montgomery.

I'm open to it, but it also depends on the staff and FO changes. This current FO cannot be trusted to rebuild the roster through the draft, and Loomis cannot remember what a low cap looks like.

So you wouldn’t take Dan Campbell? In a hypothetical situation? Just asking

Yeah, this is a dumb take. Coaches have trees and not every coach from their tree pans out, but to disregard a tree b/c you don't want anyone from it, is stupid.

Rizzi was his own man as a coach before he was ever hired by SP. He seems like he's taken a little from everywhere he's been to develop as a coach, HC candidate and Interim HC.

I would rather have the other Lions Coordinator
Same. Still on the fence with Kubiak right now. I’m not sure if he’s the guy to lead an offense or not.

He got off to a hot start, but I haven’t been impressed since then. He has had to deal with a ton of injuries for sure, but I would definitely entertain the idea of bringing in someone else to call plays.

I'm actually hoping Rizzi wins out and Kubiak proves that he can make an offense work without Taysom and we hire a new DC in the offseason.

I don't think that's gonna happen, so plan B is Ben Johnson

If we finish that strong, then I’m cool keeping Kubiak. It’d be ideal if Kubiak could be the guy and we don’t have to go out there competing with other teams for the top offensive minds on the market. It’s going to be really really tough to get Johnson.

No and no. I'm tired and worried about seeing his name pop up. Hiring him is really repeating the past in a most fast fashion.

He will ruin the team even quicker than Herm Edwards cam dream of

Here’s my take right or wrong. A head coach sets the mentality, focus, procedures, accountability and attitude from the top. He isn’t involved with player development, that’s the position coaches. He shouldn’t be involved with either the offense or defense game time work, other than matching philosophy and providing a guide and such to his coordinators that should be running those things unless he himself is the defacto playcaller as Payton is.

He has to be a leader. Look at Allen. He was smart, but his leadership was terrible. Then you have Haslett who was less smart, less disciplined and a poor leader. Compare them with Mora or Payton. Disciplined, demanding and yet leaders.

I don’t see the point of replacing DA with a guy who worked for him and runs a similar scheme using a lot of man coverage. I’d be disappointed if Glenn is our main target in the offseason. We need bigger changes.
A change in philosophy, the front office should be open to change as well, hiring people your comfortable with will only get you the same thing, the front office has to be open to a new philosophy and vision for the franchise.
