Aaron Glenn and the Saints: Smart Hire or Familiar Misstep? (merged) (3 Viewers)

No. Maybe he’ll be a better head coach then a DC. But likely not.

Dennis Allen was a better DC. Our secondary went from average to shut down when Glenn left and DA came in. Regardless of what anyone says about DA being a head coach you can’t deny he was a very good defensive coordinator. Point being, being a good defensive coordinator currently doesn’t translate well to being a head coach in the NFL any longer.

Look at Mike MacDonald. He was a great defensive coordinator for the Ravens. Even better than Dennis Allen. Yet he’s not doing so hot up in Seattle currently.

Look around the league. How many successful head coaches are there that came from the defensive side of the ball? None? 1? 2? Now look at how many successful head coaches came from the offensive side of the ball. A dozen? Almost two dozen?

For whatever reason, offensive coaches make for better head coaches in this league over the last 5-10 years.

We need a head coach from the offensive side of the ball.

Besides. Glenn’s defense is a bit overrated and is partially protected by an offense that controls the flow with Gibbs and Montgomery.
While I prefer a offensive HC mainly because if it's a defensive HC they need a good OC and then if they have success he's more likely to get poached.
That said there are quite a few successful HC that came from the D side of the ball.
1, Johnathan Gannon AZ 6-6 in his 1st yr
2,John Harbaugh, most think of him as a ST guy but he was a DBs coach
3, Sean McDermott
4,DeMeco Ryans
5, Mike McDonald , you say he's not doing so hot but he's 7-5 in his 1st yr
6, Dan Quinn, Wash

Look at how many HCs are on the hot seat and may be fired at the end of the season. Already 1 offensive and 2 defensive HC have been fired and most of the rest on the hot seat are offensive HCs

I think Kubiak is expendable. He was handpicked by DA. His play calling is not ideal for Carr.
You try calling plays when your top 3 WRs are out. and you have 7 starters miss a total of 33 games and that's not including their backups. Plus having a 5th rd rookie @ QB for 3 games

if we hire glenn it will be hard to be a saints fan and i have never said that. i onviously will always be but i know if we hire him we’re doomed for 3-4 more years. Im actually trying to get my son to like the saints but maybe i shouldn’t lol

We don't have very good track records with defensive minded head coaches. The only successful defensive head coach we ever had was Jim Mora during the Dome Patrol era. So no, I don't think hiring Aaron Glenn will be a good move.

I'm not sure what that has to do with whether or not a defensive HC would be successful, but the only offensive coach we have hired that was any good was Payton.

And Haslett also had a decent run and was probably the third best HC we have ever had. So out of our three best HCs, two were defensive HCs.

Glenn is a solid coach and I don’t think would be a bad hire, but he’s not the kind of coach that would move the needle for me for a rebuild. But I wouldn’t be sad if he got the gig.

Detroit’s winning games despite their defense.
Detroit’s defense helped them become a 14-2 team for most weeks up to this point. There were 6 games of holding opponents to 14 points or less, including a few games of 6-9 points allowed. Most of their other games ranging between 16-20 points allowed.

They allowed 16.9 PPG coming into December before playing Buffalo and San Fran in 2 of the last 3 weeks. T-8th in PPG allowed after week 16.

Their run defense is 3rd in least rushing yards allowed. Pass defense is 31st in passing yards allowed but T-3rd in INTs. They have opportunistic DBs but lacking shutdown cover corners who won’t give up a lot of passing yards which explains the passing yards allowed ranking.

It does not matter to me whether the coach comes from the offensive or defensive side of the ball. If we had a young quarterback picked high in the draft to develop, I would favor a creative offensive coach, but we don't. Rattler has some talent and could develop, but in all probability, he is not our quarterback of the future.

I do not know or know enough about Aaron Glenn so it is unfair for me to judge him on his leadership. My concern is complacency given his relationships in the building--that he will not say this team ranks near the bottom in the league and will shy away from expressing views that will reflect badly on what the Saints as an organization have been doing. For starters, I think we need someone with no ties to this organization who will be brutally honest in his assessment of the team's personnel and organization. In short, because of his years in New Orleans, I am afraid that a Glenn hiring will provide a bit of comfort to management and ownership. I am terrified of the team hiring Dennis Allen lite.
