Adalius Thomas gives his thoughts on an 18 game schedule (1 Viewer)

...and without players there are no fans.

What you have here is a circular argument. One side is saying that without A you will not have B and the other side is saying without B you will not have A. What's circular is that you're both correct.

But here's my thing. My boss asks me to pull extra time, ok sure, but I'm going to expect some sort of compensation for it, just like ever other reasonable person around. Whether that compensation be extra vacation time, overtime pay or whatever doesn't matter. I'm going out of my way to do something extra for my employer, then it's not unreasonable for me, the employee, to expect something for my efforts.

That said, I wouldn't blame any other employee of any other company to seek the same and it doesn't matter the size of their current paycheck. The argument based on the fact that NFL players make large sums of money is wanting to penalize somebody that makes more money than you simply because they make more money than you.

Just like you and I would expect a little lagniappe for going above and beyond, they should too.

This. This. This.

But there would always be 'big time' players.

Look at it this way. The athletes of today are 10Xs better than the athletes of the past. Does that mean there were no big time players back then? No. If you took out all of the elite players on offense AND defense...then the next level of players would then be considered the elite ones because we wouldn't know any better.

exactly, best post

whats wrong with some of you people. if my boss tells me i have to work more i only have 2 options.
1- i can quit and hope that i can find a job in this economy.
2- i can do it
i just dont understand unions, look what it has done to general motors. if someone owns a company he should tell you what you will be doing and working for, not the other way around.

There is another option. If you are valuable enough, then you can negotiate. And that's what will happen with the players union and the NFL. Considering that the players possess a rare skill, they are in a strong position to negotiate. On the other hand, there are probably millions of other people who can do your job. Eventually the players and the NFL will find an arrangement that is agreeable and both will make more money.

And remember--these players need to be able to feed their families.

I love these threads where people feel that athletes should do whatever they're told simply because they make a lot of money. As if the amount you make should reduce your rights. It dosn't matter what you do or make, and it dosn't matter what I do or make, simply because you're jealous(me too) that these guys get paid millions to play football dosn't mean they don't deserve to have rights.

Most importantly, people forget that our bosses can say "if you don't like it, quit." However, that dosn't work in the NFL. You and I can be replaced and our bosses could care less. You can't replace NFL players and still have an NFL. People won't pay to watch a crappy product. This is what people forget with the "go work at Walmart nonsense." The players have leverage, we don't.

:plus-un2:

If someone's job makes changes, then everyone should be compliant. They do not have to like it, but be compliant. Players used to complain about getting hurt(in preseason) and wanted the preseason shortened, which the NFL(being a great organization) decided to get the players what they wanted. Now the players might make far less than thay are used to for TWO games. Now the players might hate the idea. Every player that has a problem with this should just shut up and stick to the plan.A great business makes changes for their employees. These paycheck players need to play for the love of the game. It is only two games. And who cares that the NFL and the owners makes billions. They should. Football is the greatest sport in the US.
