My uncle Jeff is a giant of a human being, like 6”5, 230 and dude is a hugger. I hated when he moved overseas, not just because he’s my favorite uncle, but now, every time he visits, it’s like I can’t breathe from the boa constrictor attack. In his 60s, this dude has old man strength.

Being 5 feet tall on a good day automatically makes it awkward hugging a tall man. The old armpit to the face is common depending on their approach.

as a HS teacher, most of my non-family hugs are side hugs (if you'd prefer armpit to side of head)

That's fine and all but that still leaves one side of the head/face in the pit since a 6+ footer essentially has a larger armpit than my head.
And having said that I hope I never type those words again.
