He is such a smart player, he knows exactly what note to use and when to use it every time.

I've never cared for his music that much but what Jeff Beck can do with a guitar is amazing.

My personal favorites are of course Jimmy Page and Jimmy Hendrix. Page being rather sloppy but great at what he does.

Another of my favorites is Jack White. Yet another player who can be rather sloppy at times, but gets the feel and the emotion of what he wants out of the guitar he chooses.

plenty of the usual names already said and I agree with them. Found spot for Hendrix, J. Page, Clapton, etc.

I'll add a few other names I didn't really see or maybe saw once.

James Hetfield. Sure not a solo guitar guy, but has written a ton of catchy riffs.

Kirk Hammett - If I'm bringing up James, I need to bring up the lead.

Ted Nugent - Stranglehold is just a great song. Fred Bear too.

Richie Blackmore (he may have been listed, I forget) - Smoke on the Water, Highway Star.. c'mon

Very very low on the list, but just because I found his style unique, David Scott Lucas from Local H. I just did that he added bass pickups to his guitar to play both at the same time. Pretty raw kind of sound. Very Nirvana like to me.

Jerry Cantrell

I have enjoyed reading all the opinions in this thread. I am a classic rock guy and appreciate Hendrix, SRV, Page, Clapton, and so on. I am not a musician and might be the least talented person on earth when it comes to music. I will add Derek Trucks and ask a question about someone who often appears on top rock guitarist lists: George Harrison. I've heard people compliment his slide playing as distinctive but I do not know if he is really just included because of his Beatles affiliation and songwriting? I envy those of you who can play!!! Thanks for this thread OP!!!
