Alltime favorite guitarists (2 Viewers)

OK, I'm a drummer and a bit of a Rush geek, but I still say that Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitar players around. And, Geddy Lee ain't too shabby at "Slappin' the Bass" either...
:9:

They finally got their "due" this past month. Lifeson was shredding and he's gotta be 60+....

1. Stevie Ray Vaughan
2. Jimi Hendrix
3. Buddy Guy
4. Albert King
5. Freddie King
6. Albert Collins
7. Duane Allman (with Dickey Betts too)
8. B.B. King
9. T-Bone Walker
10. Eric Clapton
11. Hubert Sumlin
12. Lightnin' Hopkins
13. Mick Taylor (with Kieth Richards too)
14. John McLaughlin
15. Prince
16. Wes Montgomery
17. Randy Rhoads
18. Jeff Beck
19. David Gilmour
20. Dave Mustaine (with Marty Friedman too)
21. Mick Ronson
22. Kenny Burrell
23. Carlos Alomar (with Earl Slick too)
24. Jimmy Nolen
25. Mike Scaccia.

I like a lot of different stuff and a lot of different guitar players (hence the reason Ronson, Rhoads and Mustaine are in there). I try to kinda even it out, but I guess Blues Rock is my favorite. I try to stay very open minded to music even though I am a bit of a closed minded one.

Dave Mustain = Top 5 IMO. Anyone who can play like that while singing amazes me. Hangar 18.....

I'll play the hippie card and add Trey Anastasio to is this thread - he deserves to be in the discussion.

Not enough love for Steve Vai in this thread :jpshakehead: :idunno:

I'm a fan of Satriani and Eric Johnson. But I just can't get into Vai. His recording style is just so compressed and loud. He takes that late 80's sound and makes it a caricature of itself. I'll always like some of his stuff like For the Love of God. But most is too annoying and loud.

Since blues rock is your favorite, how can you miss adding Tony Iommi to your list? He just added a distorted darkness to his bluesy riffs and solos and was a follower of Wes Montgomery.

For me there's Hendrix and then everbody else. That's no slight to any of the other greats, it's just that Hendrix is on another level. He has given me more chills than any other guitarists and nobody else moves me like him.

After him I'd say Clapton and Page. Led Zep was like an all star team when you think about it. IMHO they had THE best drummer ever, a top 5 guitarist, and a top 5 frontman.

It's good to see David Gilmour getting some much deserved love here. I've always thought he was underrated and when most people think of Pink Floyd they think of the synthesized music. Gilmour hammered out some of the best guitar work of all time and a great example would be "Time" from Dark Side of the Moon. Simply incredible. When I was young and prone to certain...moods, his guitar would take me places. Sometimes good places, sometimes dark places. But always awe inspiring.

I totally understand what you are saying...but Passion and Warfare is a freaking masterpiece!:hihi:

Glad to see Hendrix getting all the love, he should be near the top of everyone's list, if not first.

I wasn't too surprised to see Adam Jones unmentioned until several posts into the discussion. As someone said earlier, I think he is the most underrated guitarist of the past 20 years, probably because of his demeanor and laid back attitude. He's like the Colston of guitarist, for the sake of an analogy. Not flashy, modest for his trade, and the ultimate team player, Jones has innovated the electric guitar with his use of multiple amps, synthesizers, pedal boards, and instruments, like utilizing a talk box with the track Jambi. He's a true artist, and expresses it through his many talents.

Peter Green (B.B. King: "The only guitar player I've ever heard who can make me sweat")
Roy Buchanan
Ritchie Blackmore
Andres Segovia
Duane Allman

Watched the Bio on Fleetwood Mac recently and it led me to look into the founding member, Peter Green. Fascinating story. The music industry has nothing but extremely high praise for him, but he's relatively an unknown. I always thought Carlos Santana wrote Black Magic Woman, but it was Green (Greenbaum). Here's a 90 minute BBC special on him on YouTube:

No expert by a long shot but some of my favorites include:

Paul Gilbert
Dimebag Darrel
David Gilmour
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Alexi Laiho
Eric Clapton
and of course Hendrix

Playing at his level, left-handed on a right-handed guitar (upside down) only adds to the legend that is Jimi Hendrix.
