Alltime favorite guitarists (1 Viewer)

Okay, let's just say that in the first post I was trying to nicely say that I didn't want to get into a "discussion" about the merits of Joe Satriani's playing - I didn't feel it was the place and I vehemently disagreed with the first post.

if a thread about guitar players is not the place to discuss guitar players, can you point me in that direction so i can tell you that i think Satriani makes boring music?

As far as Adam Jones is concerned... Yes, I did discuss the merits of Adam Jones (oh my). But, I was really agreeing with the first post about him. I really have a tremendous respect for Jones and was trying to convey that. Definitely not a "dis" or an argument.

i see...only positive opinions that you agree with are acceptable in this thread about guitar players

cool story

btw, Tool was a much better band when they didn't take themselves so seriously

Actually, I wouldn't put him on my list of favorites - mostly because I like other things than what he does. But I do love Tool and have to admit that he is a major part of what they do. I think he may have one of the smallest egos of any big name guitarist. He seems to be all about what is best for the band rather than being showy for his own sake (he's said as much in interviews). And when you're in a band with Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor... well, let's just say that there isn't a lot of room left for amazing levels of flash.

Well, he is one of my favorites for the same things you mentioned. :hihi:

I still like Tool's newer stuff. :idunno:

Fine. You opened the door.

I like Tool. No complaint there.

As far as Satch is concerned, have you ever seen him play live? I'm not going all Satch crazy here (I like Vai and Johnson better), but the guy is pretty phenomenal. If you listen to the way he phrases, the way he works in and out of harmonic content (polychordal/atonal improvisation), his interpretation and ability to stress and release his solos at exactly the right times to fit with the band (live, he's incredibly cognizant of what the band is doing around him). He truly is an amazing player. The funny thing is, I don't particularly care for his studio albums, but just go onto youtube and listen to his live work and he stands the test to me.

You see, I liked this thread because it just was a listing of people who you liked - not people you didn't like. So it was cool to talk positively about guys like Adam Jones because he does bring interesting things to the table. But when someone starts saying something negative about a player that someone else really likes, it is disrespectful to the person who likes them - as if their opinions are somehow not based on any basis of knowledge or logic. For example, I don't "like" Elvis' music, but I respect him and what he did and I certainly don't call anyone else's tastes concerning him into question. As far as Satriani is concerned, the only thing I can say about someone who thinks his music is boring or that he cannot play a "riff" is that perhaps that person isn't very knowledgeable about music and guitar playing in general. It's about respect. I respect your opinion even if you think Tiny Tim is God's gift to guitarists. I'm not going to dump all over that. Who knows, I might even learn something.

i saw "Satch" at HOB about 6 years ago i guess....and it was a cool show...i think Eric Johnson opened up for him(i liked him more)...i never said he wasn't a great guitar player....his style of music just doesn't really do much for me..

ok....but this is a message board and not everyone likes the same stuff

if you feel disrespected because someone doesn't like the same things you do, maybe you need to rethink some things

once again, i saw Satriani live...his music still bored me....if that makes me less knowledgeable about music than you, i am ok with that....but at least turn the radio down on your high horse as you ride past me

So you don't like Satriani. I get that. But to make a blanket statement about the quality of his playing calls MY opinion into question. I didn't get onto any high horse to begin with, but you began this conversation with disrespect. Opinions are equal - we all have them. But when you make a statement that calls my opinion into question, I will respond in kind. You seem to be the one who is touting your "expanded knowledge" about music in that you seem to think that your opinion trumps others. If you're going to talk the talk, then, by God, you'd better be able to walk the walk. So... how many degrees in music do you have? How long have you been performing professionally? Are you an accomplished and readily working studio musician? How many instruments do you play professionally? You've talked the talk. You've called my opinion down as if it has no worth. Now walk the walk. Either put up or shut up.

good lord man....what on earth are you talking about??

where did i "make a blanket statement about the quality of his playing"??

where exactly did i disrespect you??

where did i say my opinion trumps others??

what walk am i supposed to be walking??

First, you started by backing up this statement, which is a bit inflammatory (for jumping on my case for saying the thread was indeed about opinions)

joe satriani is an amazing player but the dude cant write a riff to save his soul. the greatest guitar player in the world doesnt mean **** to me if he cant write a good song

Then you said:

You're trying to turn the tables on me and it won't work. I don't care whether you do or don't like Satriani (or anyone else for that matter). Now you're trying to make it sound as if you're the wounded one, here. I only wanted to make this thread about people's interests in guitarists - which is a good thread - that way we can find out new things - positive things. But you are the one who escalated this into something more base when you could have just left it alone.

Honestly, I think it best if we just drop it here. If you're not trying to one-up me, then fine, but it sure seems that way. I'm fine with letting it be if you are. Nothing to be gained here.

OK, I'm a drummer and a bit of a Rush geek, but I still say that Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitar players around. And, Geddy Lee ain't too shabby at "Slappin' the Bass" either...

i didn't even say the first one that you quoted....if you are going to channel your butthurt, at least point it in the right direction

Read posts 28 and 37, at which points you interjected yourself into the conversation in a very disrespectful manner.

I'm trying to keep this cool. I'd just as soon drop it. But if you want to be schooled, I can go there. If that's what you want, why don't you say something about why you don't think I should think Satriani is a good guitarist or writer. Or are you able to actually analyze the music to that level?

I'd really rather just drop it. Why don't you agree to that?

i tell you what, just quote a post where i said that Satriani is not a good guitar player and we can go from there
