Article About the Evolution of the Shanahan System and What Makes it Work (1 Viewer)

You wanna run this offense? Go get Michael Penix.

Carr is mentally and physically incapable of running Bill Walsh's offense.

In knowing now that Arthur Smith comes from the Shanahan tree (learned under Matt LaFleur in TN before LaFleur left), it makes sense that every time we played the Titans I felt like I was watching the same thing over and over. Guess I didn't notice it as much against the Falcons in his time there, though.

It's Bill Walsh's offense. Create motion and throw short passes to speedy RAC players. There's alot of timing involved and Carr's fragile mind won't be able to handle it.

What about Laviska Shenault? Trying to think of FA WR's that can play a Deebo Samuel role and line up at RB but is listed as a WR.

Only Deebo Samuel can play Deebo's role.

So, another thing I noticed, is that they have run less PA but they've still put the type of personnell on the field that says run.

We need a FB upgrade in a major way.
Exactly, its the FB that forces the D to stack the line thus allowing the offense to dictate the play. Outside of the FB i think we can adjust w/ the other pieces. The thought of Bowers (if he can play full back) seems like a great addition.

That's not the Shanahan offense. I mean, read the article that starts this thread. But, I do have some concerns if Carr can run the Shanahan offense.

I read the article. It's a ton of blah blah blah that took forever to get to the premise, and I found the writer to be swimming in football porn. He talked about Shanny describing his scheme with Chris Simms, but he did not mention that Shanny and Simms have matching ankle tattoos. Weak.

If Shanny wins Sunday, he can have his due.

Scheme and players go together. I saw Brock Purdy play alot in college and he is efficient, accurate, and smooth.
Then you put in all those weapons: McCaffrey, Deebo, Aiyuk, Juschyk. Oh, and George Kittle. If you can't run a "genius" offense with that personnel, then you should be run off.

The Saints are light years from that personnel on offense.

It's the Bill Walsh offense. Cool QB, RB is a serious run/catch threat. Receivers unguardable deep, medium, shallow. Get the ball out quick.

Exactly. And most teams are looking for receivers with top end speed and height that play the outside and slot guys are undervalued. If we had a stockier possession/slot receiver that could also line up in the backfield occasionally, that would be really ideal to play the Deebo role. I just don't know who those guys are or how to find them.
Taysom Hill says hello...

Yeah, it will be interesting to see because it strikes me that guys with that position versatility often don't get used well in college and so don't get drafted high. I'm thinking of guys like AK who wasn't used properly in college and had Payton not seen him run routes, could have been drafted way past the 3rd round. Also, guys like Antoine Randle El. I'd think some of the running QBs that will get converted to WR could be among those that might work. But, I'm no expert on the draft or football in general.
How about Lynn Bowden being that wide receiver coming out of the backfield?

Bill Walsh's offense wasn't centered around motion and short passes per se. His offense was based on timing, precision, and execution. Modern offenses are centered around short passes to speedy players, yes, but not in the same way. Today's game is based on spacing and not timing. QBs need to be accurate, yes but precision, not as much. That's why our offense seemed "outdated." When you look at the modern NFL, the best QBs are the ones that are throwing to wide open receivers with nothing but space around them. When you look at Bill Walsh's and Shanahan's offense, they are nothing alike. You can just look at any 49ers game from the 80s and 90s and you'll see the ball come out at the end of their drop the vast majority of the time. Shanahan? Not as much but you see a lot of short passes to receivers in space..LOL

That's a good point. Someone recently pointed out that he won an award in college for the most versatile player the year that he ran for a bunch of yards as a QB at Kentucky. And we know he can block and has YAC ability so he would seem to be a good bet to at least approximate the Deebo role. He's probably not going to be the player Deebo is, but he can be used to create the illusions of formation so important to the Shanahan system.
