Assuming Kwon is NOT Coming Back (1 Viewer)

I'm wondering if the plan is to go DB-heavy more often than not.
4 down linemen, Lattimore and Adebo on the outside, Maye and Matthieu @ safties, Ceedy, Davis, and PJ Williams/other LB (Baun?) round it out.
This combination could stop the run, I think, as well as be effective against the pass.
Where is Taylor our rookie? Where is he playing? Basically what this is saying is that our 2nd round pick is not playing this year. Got it.

Who is Matthieu?

Pete is very athletic and has the speed to get to those RBs In the flat. I think he’s always been Kwons replacement. He’s a better tackler too.
Don’t care what the RAS says. Kwon plays faster and brings an energy to the D that Pete does not. That’s no knock on Pete, just truth. Imo.
Definitely want Kwon back on this team. Werner has good potential, but Kwon brings a different level of swagger to this team when he's out there.

This could be a championship defense.
💯.

I don’t completely disagree. We’ve had talent on this defense for years. But the biggest change after 2017 week 2 and since has been swagger and attitude. That’s completely underrated.

The Saints nickel big/4-2-5 is their base defense going pure snap count and the fact they regularly use it vs 21 personnel. CJGJ is the starter at "SAM" (if you want to think of it in those terms).

Werner will be the starter ar WILL and Dunbar at MIKE. Jackson has the speed to provide good depth at WILL but he's gonna have to round out his coverage play.

Dunbar? I think you meant Davis.

Seems like we cover running backs better with Kwon playing. Probably just my imagination because the way playoff Lenny went off on us in the playoff game.
This is probably the main reason I want Kwon back. That and his energy/leadership. Like you said it might be our imagination but it seems like we were able to defend those little dinks and dunks to RBs/TEs much better with Kwon in the game. Seemed like he was usually in position to immediately bring down the pass catcher for limited yards after catch.

That's all I've ever really wanted from a Saints LBer. Just be in the general vicinity of the guy when the pass is thrown. For years RBs/TEs have been catching balls with no Saints defender in sight. Literally no Saints defender on the TV screen. Just the guy catching the pass and a bunch of grass. And offenses would do it over and over and over. Remember that Green Bay game a few years ago when it seemed like our defense wasn't aware that RBs and TEs were eligible to be thrown to? Just could not make an adjustment.

I think we used Kwon money to sign Mathieu. I agree with the other posters that we will field a 4-2-5 more snaps than any other formation. I'd love to have Kwon back, but don't blame him for going somewhere else to make more than we can afford to pay him.

I don't know analytics and can't breakdown the nuances of the LB position. All I know is what my eyes tell me, and they've made it very clear that our D is way better with Kwon on the field. Even with his injury history, I want him back in a Saints uni.

Loomis and Co. say different.

Kwon may come back on a cheaper one year deal but they drafted Werner for a reason and he's not going to just sit behind a player because that player is liked by fans. Its time to move forward and Kwon does not appear to be in the plans for the Saints or any other team for that matter since he hasn't signed anywhere else which may be because of his asking price.

He's a good piece to add to the defense but he is not a viewed as a starter and that maybe the hang-up with Kwon getting a job with the Saints or any other Team, he was starter money and opportunity but his injury history is a red flag for some Teams, Saints included.
