Baldy’s Breakdown: Taysom Hill vs 49ers (1 Viewer)

I would imagine the Packers had tunnel vision and only imagined him as a QB without thinking outside the box.
That seems plausible, and why he went undrafted is bc of season ending injury...their loss our gain, ...that is as long as he's being used as a 1st down/TD machine imo

As an undrafted 27 year old rookie free agent in 2017 Taysom Hill signed with the Packers. He was competing for the 3rd string backup job with Joe Callahan behind starter Aaron Rodgers. Brett Hundley was considered the 2nd string QB at the time. Hill outplayed both Hundley and Callahan in training camp and preseason.

The Packers chose to go with only 2 QBs on their initial 53-man roster, cutting both Callahan and Hill while keeping Rodgers and Hundley.

The Saints only kept 2 QBs on their initial 53-man roster in 2017, Drew Brees and Chase Daniel.

They claimed Hill the day after he was cut by the Packers and put him on the 53-man roster.

Ironically the Saints had made a similar move the year before by signing Joe Callahan to the practice squad after he was cut by the Packers.

Joe Callahan resigned with the Packers in 2017 after being cut. He appeared in 1 game in his entire career. In 2017 he threw 7 passes, completing 5 for 11 yards.

Aaron Rodgers was injured in 2017 and only played in 7 games.

Brett Hundley was a 5th round draft choice by the Packers in 2016. Hundley started 9 games in 2017 while Rodgers was injured. He posted a 3-6 record.

Hundley was active for only 3 seasons, 2016 & 2017 with the Packers, and 2018 with the Cardinals in 2019. He was active for only 14 games his entire career.

Ironically the Saints signed Hundley to the practice squad during the 2022 season. He was with the team a total of 6 days before being released.

Sean Payton wasn't thinking outside the box initially when he signed Hill. He saw Taysom as a project QB. Hill did not see a single offensive snap in 2017.

It was during the 2017 season that then special teams coach Mike Westhoff borrowed Hill with the blessing of Payton. The Legend began.
