Video Baldy’s Breakdown: Taysom Hill vs. Colts (1 Viewer)

Hmm...this is probably a stupid question. But, can ya line Hill up next to Carr, then before the snap, have Carr shift left/right, and be replaced at QB with Hill? Put the defense in a spot.

Sounds like some backyard stuff, but...eh

You can, it’s kind of like when you put both of them in the huddle and then put Carr out wide to and Hill at QB.

But I think you have to question whether we are better off just committing to having 10 blockers with Hill and telling opposing defenses “you know what we are going to do, just try and stop this” with the threat of that 20% chance this is actually a passing play being the “keep them honest” step.

He’s a very patient runner, and seems to have next level vision when it comes to allowing his blocks to set up and then following behind them. You just never see a “negative” run when taking it QB power. Give him 1 pass attempt every 4-5 runs just to keep the defense honest and let’s try him on first down some.

Yep. He has that prime Leveon Bell patience to his game. Really fun to watch.

I think Taysom will still be an effective rusher going into his age 35 season in 2025.

He began his NFL career at 27. He wasn’t utilized in QB power until 28. He received only 64 carries during his first 2 seasons on offense. So he doesn’t have the same mileage as other ballcarriers in their early-mid 30s.

He’ll still be a capable backup QB who can run when his contract expires in ‘26, even if he can’t perform as many QB power snaps.

Agreed…it’s more so about number of carries with him than age. He doesn’t have the same amount of tread lost on his tires than most guys his age.

Wasn’t there a stat that we are 17-1 or so when Taysom plays X amount of snaps?

Hopefully Pete scrolls through insta and sees it

Yes, we are 17-1 when Taysom has 7 or more carries.

The question is, are we winning because Taysom is carrying the ball 7 or more times, or is Taysom carrying the ball 7 or more times because we are winning?

Regardless, the guy is a baller and it’s time for us to start running him until the wheels fall off.

Interesting view 😅

But I believe that having Taysom run as many plays opens up the offense and also his gains per play are crucial.

Im all for keeping up the load on him

Taysom is a load. he is a very gifted runner. Better at running than he is throwing.
I'm going to let that one pass because everybody is better at one than the other. But if he did not drop below 100% completion rate as of last game (I must have missed it), I may have had to object, and still thinking about it. START THE MAN. IF YOU GIVE TAYSON HILL 3 GAMES TO GET INTO THE GROOVE, THEN YOU'LL FACE THE EAGLES IN THE NFCCG, and we'll see who does it better. At least he's getting the "QB" respect rather than the "TE" he would get from most, now some, folks.

I could literally watch an all day marathon of Baldy narrating “cut up tape” on the Saints. :munch:

:gosaints:
My favorite Baldy Breakdown was the Buffalo game, I believe in 2017. You know, the game we ran hog wild, rushing for about 300yds.

This took hours to complete, but should end any doubt that Hill is a beast and helps win games when he gets 40 yards rushing.

People were asking for a game log analysis. I went through every play in all 17 games and charted it out. Hill is THE MAN when he gets 40 yards rushing. He is a man among boys when he gets his carries and gets 40 or more rushing yards. In 17 games, Saints went 16-1, Hill really helped account for 14 of those wins, two wins were not a direct result of his getting 40 yards and they lost one game. Hebert was right, but a blind squirrel can find an acorn, even a drunk one.

Game Log Analysis of Tayson Hills Runs. Team is 16-1 when he runs for 40 or more yards. I have a (WIN) listed if his overall play and/or rushes mattered in the lead and outcome. (LOSS), if yards did not really matter, such as yards when the Saints were well ahead and an (I) listed for incomplete, where you can’t really say if his yards really helped in the win or not.

The short Summary is that the Saints are 16-1 overall when Hill rushes for 40 or more yards, in 14 of those wins, Hills yards rushing yards, TD’s rushing and some passing stats were crucial to winning the game with first score, go ahead drives and some icing of the games when the games were still in doubt. In two games, I gave a grade of Incomplete, where you can’t argue that his yards helped, but the yards were not in “garbage time” either. In only one game was the game a Loss and Hill’s yards didn’t matter because the team lost.

17 games:

Hill WON 14

Saints WON 2, Hill’s yards were likely not necessary in the win.

Saints lost 1 game

Game 1: 11/8/2020. Saints steamrolled Tampa Bay on the road and won 38-3. Hill had 7 carries for 54 yards.

Of those yards 38 were in the first half with two big runs or 23 and 12 yards. The Saints destroyed Tampa and were leading 31-0 at the half. Hill didn’t get his yards in garbage time as 38 of his 54 yards rushing were in the first half. Analysis of this game, Hill had big plays early that helped the Saints, but Saints mauled Tampa so hard to say if Hill was crucial to this victory, but his yards were NOT garbage yards late in the game. I give this a (WIN) on this game.

Game 2: 11/15/2020. Saints beat Niners 27-13. Hill had 8 carries for 45 yards.

Saints were trailing 10-3 before Hill had a carry. He had 14 net rushing yards in a drive, Saints tied game 10-10. The Saints then led the game 27-13 and Hill had 34 rushing yards after the Saints had the lead that held to the final score. Analysis, Hill had positive plays early, but did most of his work after the Saints had a two score lead. (Incomplete)

Game 3: 11/22/2020. Saints beat the Falcons 24-9. Hill had 10 carries for 49 yards and 2 rushing TD’s.

Hill started at QB in this game, so his stats are strange. He actually fumbled on his longest carry of the game, in the 4th quarter, but the Saints were well in control and in the lead by the same score that was the final score, 24-9. He was 18/23 passing for 233 yards, 0 TD’s and 0 INT’s. He was sacked 3 times. He had one fumble lost rushing but scored 2 rushing TD’s. My analysis is that his rushing yards mattered in this game and his 2 rushing TD’s mattered. (WIN)

Game 4: 11/29/2020. Saints destroyed Denver 31-3. Hill had 10 carries for 44 yards and 2 rushing TD’s.

Hill again started at QB. He had the first two TD’s of the game on rushing plays, threw a pass that led to a FG, then had another long run that helped another drive for a TD in the 3rd quarter and put the Saints up 24-3. No doubt his rushes helped the team build a lead and extend the lead. Hill was 9/16 for 78 yards with one INT and three sacks. This was the infamous NO QB game played by Denver. (WIN)

Game 5: 12/6/2020. Saints beat Atlanta 21-16. Hill had 14 carries for 83 yards.

Hill again started at QB, he was 27/37 for 232 and 2 TD’s. He had his long run of the game for 43 yards that helped set up the first TD of the game and put the Saints up 7-0 with a TD pass to TQS. In the second quarter, with the Saints up 7-6, Hill had two short runs and a TD pass to Jared Cook to put the Saints up 14-6. On the first drive of the third quarter, Hill had 9 yards rushing, 43 yards passing and drove the team for a TD to put the Saints ahead 21-9. Hill’s passing and rushing mattered. (WIN)

Game 6: 1/3/2021. Saints beat Carolina 33-7. Hilla had 7 carries for 41 yards.

A wounded Drew Brees was back at QB. Hill had two carries for 7 yards in the first scoring drive of the game. Saints went up 7-0. With the Saints up 16-7 in the early third quarter, Hill had 15 yards rushing and helped a little bit during a Saints FG drive that put the Saints up 19-7, later in the THIRD quarter, Hill had a 3 yard carry and a 15 yard TD carry that put the Saints up 26-7. This pretty much helped put the game out of reach. (WIN)

Game 7: 12/2/2021 Saints lost to Dallas 27-17. This is the one loss by the Saints when Hill ran for 40 or more yards. He had 11 carries for 101 yards.

Hill again started at QB where he was 19-41 for 264 yards 2 TD’s and 4 INT’s. He didn’t have a good game at QB, but his best rushing impact was during the third quarter, with the game still in doubt, where he had 42 yards rushing in one drive that brought the Saints to within 13-10. Hill didn’t get his rushing yards in garbage time, but the 4 INT’s sure contributed to the loss. This is a (LOSS), because the Saints lost

Game 8: 12/12/2021. Saints destroyed the Jets 30-9. Hill had 12 carries for 45 yards.

Hill again started at QB where he was 15-21 for 175 yards and 0/0. He had 2 rushing TD’s and a long carry of 44 yards. The Saints obliterated the Jets, but Hill had 17 yards rushing in the first Saints scoring drive of the game for a FG. Hill helped out and had positive plays in the late second and the late third quarter in FG drives to put the Saints up 13-6. He led another FG drive in the early fourth quarter with a couple of passes and put the Saints up 16-6. Saints broke the game wide open later in the fourth quarter with a two yard Hill TD rush and a late 44 yard Hill TD in the fourth quarter. Hill definitely had a positive impact on the game. (WIN)

Game 9: 1/2/2022. Saints beat Carolina 18-10. Hill had 12 carries for 45 yards.

Hill started at QB again where he was 17-28 for 222 yards and 1 TD with 0 INT’s. In the first quarter, Hill had a short run and a couple of passes to help get the Saints tied with the Panthers at 3-3. In the second quarter, Saints took advantage of a very short field and got another FG, they were now down 10-6. In the late second quarter, Hill had 69 yards passing during a drive that got the Saints a FG to get within 10-9 at the half. In the late third quarter, Saints drove for another FG on a very short field, but Hill helped out this drive with 20 yards rushing on two carries. Saints took the lead 12-10. Midway through the fourth quarter, Hill threw a TD pass to Kamara to extend the Saints lead to 18-10. Hill had positive plays in mostly FG drives but he got the TD pass towards the end of the game to ice the game. This was a hard-fought game, but Hill’s stats had a positive impact on the outcome and his rushing ability helped keep the Saints in the game. His ability, rushing and limited passing, helped eek out the win. (WIN)

Game 10: 9/11/2022. Saints defeated the Falcons 27-26. Hill had 4 carries for 81 yards.

Hill had an 11 yard TD run in the first quarter to put the Saints ahead 7-3. Hill later added a 9-yard run in the third quarter during a TD drive with Winston at QB. Saints got to within 16-10. Winston did most of the offensive damage after this, and Saints won 27-26. Hill did not get his yards in “garbage time” but his rushing was not conclusive to the outcome of the game. This gets an (Incomplete) grade.

Game 11: 10/9/2022. Saints beat Seattle 39-32. Hill had 9 carries for 112 yards with 3 TD’s.

No doubt that Hill was crucial to this win. He had an 8 yard and then a 9 yard TD runs to get Saints to 10-10 and then 17-10 in the second quarter. He capped that off with a 60 yard TD run with 5:22 left in the game to put the Saints ahead by the final score of 39-32. Yeah, Hill gets a big (WIN) on whether his performance helped win the game.

Game 12: 10/30 2022, Saints crushed the Las Vegas Raiders 24-0. Hill had 10 carries for 61 yards.

In the first scoring drive of the game, Hill had 2 yards passing, 19 yards rushing and the Saints went up 7-0. Hill added 11 yards rushing during a second quarter drive for another TD, this one was Dalton to Kamara. Saints led 17-0 with 7:15 left in the half. Hill added another 14 yards rushing during an EARLY third quarter TD drive and the saints were up 24-0, which was the final score. His yards certainly helped out in this game and his yardage was well before the game was put away. His performance was positive to the scoring lead and helped the Saints win the game, well before “garbage time”. (WIN)

Game 13: 11/20/2022. Saints defeated the Rams 27-20. Hill had 9 carries for 52 yards

First Saints scoring driving, one sack, one incomplete pass and an 8-yard run, 3-0 Saints. Second quarter, Saints down 7-3, on a short field, Saints start at Ram 49, Hill has two carries for 13 yards an incomplete pass and Saints score a TD on an 8-yard Dalton to Johnson TD pass, 10-7 Saints lead. Third quarter, Saints up 17-14, Hill has a 7-yard run and an 8-yard reception, Saints score a TD on a 53 yard pass, Dalton to Olave, the Saints lead 24-14. In the EARLY fourth quarter, Hill has two carries for 22 yards, part of a 69 yard FG drive, Saints lead 27-17. Towards the very end of the game, Hill has two carries for 5-yards while the Saints are forcing the Rams to call their timeouts. Rams get the ball back and kick a FG with 11 seconds left, final score, Saints 27, Rams 20. Hills yards in this game were mostly part of two TD scoring drives and the Saints killing the clock at the end of the game, he only had to carries for 5 yards on this drive, but forced the Rams to call all of their timeouts. Hills’ contribution in this game, no doubt, was part of their success. He gets a (WIN) here.

Game 14: 12/24/2022. Saints defeated Cleveland 17-10. Hill had 9 carries for 56 yards and 1 TD.

The Saints were down 10-0 with 4:02 left in the first half and started the drive at their own 27 yard line. Saints got the ball from their own 27 yard line with 4:07 left in the half, Hill had 4 carries for 30 yards in a FG drive to end the half at 10-3 Cleveland. To start the second half, the Saints had a 5:20 drive to score a TD to tie the score at 10-10, Hill had 2 carries for 21 yards, including the TD run to tie the game at 10-10. Early in the third quarter, the Saints intercepted Watson, had a 15 yard drive, Hill had 1 yard on 1 carry and Saints score a TD on a 4-yard Kamara run. Saints lead to 17-10, which was the final score. Hill only had two carries for 4-yards the rest of the game. No doubt that Hills contribution and yards, including the FG drive and the tying TD drive, helped win the game. He gets a (WIN) here also.

Game 15: 1/1/2023. Saints defeated the Eagles 20-10. Hill had 14 carries for 46 yards and 1 TD.

Hill was also 2-2 passing in this game for 24 yards, including 1 first down pass completion. On the opening drive, Hill had 5 carries for 17 yards and a TD, the Saints led 7-0. Early in the second quarter, Hill had a 17 yard pass completion to the Philadelphia 41, the Saints only got 4 more yard after this in the drive and got a FG to extend the Saints lead to 10-0. Saints scored another FG later in the second to extend the lead to 13-0, the key play was a Dalton to Shaheed completion of 58 yards. Hill had a net of two yards rushing in the drive, with his last run for -1 yard. With 3:35 left in the game and the Saints clinging to a 20-10 lead, Hill was used as a clock killer. He had 29 yards on 5 carries which caused the Eagles to burn all three of their timeouts. Saints won 20-10. The plays by Hill resulted in a TD score, helped a FG drive and he caused the eagles to burn their timeouts when the game had a slim hope left for the Eagles. Zero doubt this is a (WIN) game for Hill.

Game 16: 9/18/2023. Saints defeated the Carolina Panthers by a score of 20-17. Hill had 9 carries for 75 yards, including 5 runs for first downs. Midway through the second half, Hill had 2 carries for 16 yards as part of a 65 yard FG drive that stalled at the 10 yard line. Saints up 3-0. Early in the second quarter, Saints had another long FG drive of 51 yards, Hill had two carries for 8 yards, Saints led by 6-3. Midway through the 3rd quarter, Hill only had a pass completion of 8-yards on the 75 yard TD drive, Saints up by a score of 13-6. With 5:30 left in the game, Saints got the ball at their own 21 yard line and drove for a TD drive to go ahead 20-9. Hill had 2 carries for 24 yards in the drive, including 2 first down runs. With 1:15 left in the game, Hill helped ice the win with an 11 yard first down run, which forced Carolina to burn their second and third timeouts. Hill had positive plays on three Saints scoring drives, that helped them build the lead and he helped ice the game with a first down run late in the game. ZERO doubt that Hill made a very positive contribution to the game, well before the game was decided. This is another (WIN) game for Hill.

Game 17: 10/29/2023. Saints defeated Indianapolis 38-27. Hill had 9 carries for 63 yards and 2 rushing TD’s.

Hill was also 1/2 passing for 44 yards and had 1 reception for 14 yards in this game. Late in the first quarter, Hill had a 14 yard run in the Saints first scoring drive to help tie the game at 7-7. With Indy ahead 17-7, Hill helped spark a Saints scoring drive with an 8-yard run and then a 20-yard TD run. This brought the Saints to within 17-14. After the Saints had built a lead to 28-20, early in the fourth quarter, Hill got 14 yards on 3 carries, including a TD run to put the Saints up 35-20. Late in the fourth quarter, Hill had 8 net yards on three carries, but the Saints kicked a crucial FG to go up 38-27 and this iced the game. Hill helped out on many scoring drives and scored 2 rushing TD’s. Again, zero doubt this is a (WIN) game for Hill.

See the first quote above. This took me MANY hours to put together.

The Saints win because Hill gets his carries and yards, not in spite of it.
