Bayou Billionaires - New CMT show about Shreveport family (9 Viewers)

One reason our state has had trouble for decades is because we are all perceived to be a bunch of toothless, uneducated bayou living people by many people in this country. These shows only reinforce those beliefs.

Business owners make those decisions based on things like the taxes they have to pay, what their insurance premiums will be for their physical assets, and other things related to what their profit margin is. They are also smart enough to know their labor pool isn't limited to a handful of yokels on a TV show.

Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina share similar perceptions, I think. Yet, they've been able to lure big business (e.g. car and aircraft manufacturing). I get your point but I think that's a easy scapegoat.

I can't argue that. :9:

Lots of stories like that here. I actually transferred from the Midwest to manage the safety on our gathering system for all this gas. We are currently transporting and processng 1.2 billion cubic feet of gas a day. We originally contracted for 1.6 bcf/day. Lots of gas here. And we left plenty of real estate to increase out gas treating capacity.

So you work for Chesapeake?

Nope. Chesapeake is one of our customers, though. I work for Enterprise Products, the people who built and operate the 42" pipeline and associated gathering system.

Gotcha. Chesapeake is one of the larger employers around the OKC and have their hand in gas plays all over the place.

People talk about the quality of shows on TV, but thats capitalism at work.

Reality TV is unscripted so you dont need to pay writers, set designers, etc. Its super cheap to create and produce a reality show. Much much much cheaper than a standard sitcom or drama.

And, on top of that, they get decent ratings... While there might not be as many people watching Bayou Billionaires as CSI, I bet the ratings to cost ratio is just as good, if not better.

You wonder why I am for government funding of art? Its because reality TV is proof that capitalism is not perfect, and in the case of TV, is ruining it.

Yes, I think you're right about the inexpensive cost of production leading to the proliferation of this sort of reality tv - most of which is pretty worthless apart from cheap/base entertainment.

But at the same time, some have said that we're in a new golden age of television due to the quality of the serial dramas that have exploded basically since the Sopranos. And not all of them are on premium tv. Great shows like Lost, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, etc.

Reality tv is cheap but there's still a lot of great tv being made right now. Arguably more than ever.

They are moving into the Marcellus/Utica shale plays in force. We just announced plans to build an ethane pipeline from Pennsylvania to Texas and Chesapeake leased 75% of the space already. Looks like we are going to expand it's capacity before we lay the first joint.

Obama will find a way to block it. We don't need those jobs we have plenty in the solar panel industry.

Anyone still watching this show?

I love these people. All in all, they're good people - and pretty entertaining. Albert is hilarious and I can listen to Valerie talk all day.

Well that's sad - and it also goes to the earlier discussion on this thread (from back in '12) about why people would subject themselves that kind of publicity and online trash talk, especially when the whole thing is about how they are now in quite a lot of money.

But hard to say whether that actually mattered here, the history with this guy was already there. Perhaps her family's coming into wealth made him even more psychotic about her and that may have had nothing to do with the show.
