Bayou Billionaires - New CMT show about Shreveport family (8 Viewers)

These shows are killing us.

I almost wish that tax credit would disappear so they'd stop making shows about ridiculous morans in Louisiana.

Or perhaps someone could make a show that doesn't make Louisiana residents look like something you scrape off the bottom of your shoe at walmart.

Then again, who cares. Nevermind.

If these shows weren't interesting, they wouldn't be drawing viewers - America can't seem to get enough of Louisiana.

I'm cool with it. We've always known we're a very interesting state and while these people may not be the most polished in the world (we knew that too), they usually do whatever it is they do pretty well and with personality.

All in all, I think it makes Louisiana just look like a different and interesting place. Which it what it is. If somebody wants to draw a negative judgment from it, to hell with 'em. They wouldn't 'get it' in the first place, so what value is their opinion?

:)

I hear you, but it would be nice if there were at least one (1) show from the slew of Louisiana shows that focused on people who didn't have an accent, or missing teeth, etc. Just one that doesn't appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Swamp People is exactly what you describe, I think. But the shrimper show is ridiculous, and the cajun pawn show makes us look like arkansas rednecks. Billy the Exterminator looks like he's out of an eighties time warp when Skid Row was hot, etc.

I dunno mang. I just don't think those shows are representative of the people I bump into around here day to day. I think some producer thinks those people are interesting because they are goofy.

But paraphrasing what you wisely said, what do we care, really. It's not that big a deal. It just feels like a slight misrepresentation, or an amplification of the wingnuttery. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

I agree with many of the comments in this thread. We wonder why businesses do not relocate to our state.

Because of the shows? Attracting business to Louisiana has been a problem for decades. You're suggesting that it's in part due to these shows or similar portrayals of people in Louisiana?

I really don't think that's the answer.

Remember the Battle of the Network Stars specials back in the 70s-80s? Now, they should do a Battle of Reality Cable TV Personalities - New Jersey vs Louisiana. A couple of states with serious cesspools of talent, who will win?

Wow - that's a fascinating idea.

It would really all depend on the competition categories.

(and +rep for the 'battle of the network stars' reference :hihi: )

One reason our state has had trouble for decades is because we are all perceived to be a bunch of toothless, uneducated bayou living people by many people in this country. These shows only reinforce those beliefs.

Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina share similar perceptions, I think. Yet, they've been able to lure big business (e.g. car and aircraft manufacturing). I get your point but I think that's a easy scapegoat.

People talk about the quality of shows on TV, but thats capitalism at work.

Reality TV is unscripted so you dont need to pay writers, set designers, etc. Its super cheap to create and produce a reality show. Much much much cheaper than a standard sitcom or drama.

And, on top of that, they get decent ratings... While there might not be as many people watching Bayou Billionaires as CSI, I bet the ratings to cost ratio is just as good, if not better.

You wonder why I am for government funding of art? Its because reality TV is proof that capitalism is not perfect, and in the case of TV, is ruining it.

If every TV show ever done was as significant as MASH or whatever, then they'd all be meaningless.

Ruining TV?

Okie dokie.

The world is over. A reality TV show popped up. The human race has literally regressed back into the age of cavemen. Everything is always bad and wrong.

Blah blah blah blah.
