Best Heavy Metal Band of all time. (Do people still listen to metal?) (1 Viewer)

Documentary about the greatest metal band in the universe

RIP Oderus (Dave Brockie).

It's interesting to note the concept still goes on since there are now no original members left in GWAR, yet the current lineup is still doing the same schtick, which is still the funniest musical thing ever to hit a live stage.

Who was the first heavy metal group? Some historians claim Led Zeppelin with the release of their
first album released in Jan. 1969. Imo, it was Blue Cheer who released the first album in Jan. 1968.
Their only hit was a remake of Eddie Cochrans Summer Time Blues. They also had the reputation
as the loudest band. Concert goers would often leave the first rows when they played.

I can't really argue with your assertion of Blue Cheer, but I'll argue with anyone who claims Zeppelin as the first heavy metal group. Deep Purple's first album was released in June of 1968, so they precede Zeppelin (who I don't even consider heavy metal in the first place, but just a hard rock band), but more so, the term was coined specifically to describe the music of Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, not Zeppelin.

Younger people will gripe that Deep Purple isn't heavy metal, but that's because they aren't really aware of all the iterations metal has gone through since its inception. I've always considered Deep Purple the original Heavy Metal band since they precede Sabbath's first album by nearly two years, but I may have to concede to you on Blue Cheer. I also freely admit my bias against Zeppelin who I consider musical thieves, and find 90+% their music exceptionally boring.

The other argument, of course, is Steppenwolf, who precede all of those bands (first single released in Oct 1967) and from whose song "Born to Be Wild" comes the term in the first place. However, Steppenwolf always considered themselves to be acid rock, so IMHO that argument is invalid.

What are some metal bands that you would think, would be good, if they aren't a head banger?!?!

I think Rhamstein and System of the Down have some good songs, but they hardly measure up to Metallica or Black Sabbath. Has metal essentially died, if not what metal bands would you say are the leaders of metal right now?

Metal hasn't died at all, established bands like Deftones, Slipknot, Megadeth, Tool etc are still making music, the remaining 1/2 of Pantera reunited to tour again, and there are bands like Gojira, Mastodon, Jinjer, Meshuggah, etc. who are kind of newer but who are big names...

There is plenty of metal being made, ya just gotta look for it and see what you like...

Naw, it hasn't died, it's just gone the route of many music genres, you have to look to find good music these days IMO.....the mainstream music today, heck the last 20+ years has, with few exceptions, not much to do with instruments.....or actual musical talent....

Metal, like Prog rock, jazz, R&B, gospel, blues, bluegrass don't have the huge wide mainstream appeal that they once did. I think part of the problem is the electronic age, kids/young adults just aren't playing instruments at the rate that they used to....but some still do and create some great music you just aren't going to hear it on the radio much....

My prime example is Tedeschi Trucks band, in the 70's Derek Trucks would have been considered a guitar god, Susan would have been all over magazine covers as the next Janis Joplin/Bonnie Raitt....they would have sold out stadiums....Today, they make a very good living in medium size venues....

It's mostly an American issue. Bands like Nightwish, Sabaton, and Ghost are humungous outside of the US.

So, Metallica has fallen, and can't get album sales up.

What I don't understand is, many people pick on the Black Album, it was good at the time, and still the best selling.

The Load (of garbage) album was when Metallica became a parody for metal. Not sure why Jason hung around when that was released, but Reload sent him packing. At least he did two good albums.

Kill 'Em All U.S. Sales 4.5 million
Ride the Lightning 6.9 million
Master of Puppets 7.9 million
Post Cliff albums.....
...And Justice for All 9.7 million
Metallica 17.3 million
Load 5.4 million
Reload 4.4 million Last album with Jason Newsted?
St. Anger 2 million
Death Magnetic 2.1 million
Hardwired... to Self-Destruct 1.2 million
72 Seasons
373,000
Can't live off of Social Security 56,000 (Rumored to be released in 2030)

Those all sound like Iron Maiden/Opera Metal to me. I guess when I think of Metal, it's more of the thrash metal/garage type. Black Sabbath, Metallica *Pre Black Album, and Pantera.

Right now one of the biggest bands going is Lorna Shore, I'm guessing next album has a Black album like effect and result- which could be good and bad

Death Metal. I really think that's the future for Metal. One way way or the other. It will keep non-metal heads away and bring some sort of Metal superiority back. Metal has to scare people, that's sorta the genre....Right?

Whoever the drummer is, he is a living drum machine. da-da-da-da X100 300 bpm lol

I like the music….dont really care for the singing…

Music is catchy, don't mind the vocals, definitely heard worse singing from the Foo Fighters. Personally, the guitar/orchestra vibe turns me off a bit, but at the same time, gives it some melodic feel, so it's easier to listen to. It also slightly bounces it out of the metal"core" arena, into the opera/orchestra realm. I don't know why that is creeping in metal so much, but it's at least better than going pop. lol

I'm not really a metalhead, but this is the best way I can describe it.

Mr Speedo even gave a review of the drummer. You can hear him giggle like a little girl, if you listen closely. He definitely was excited reviewing his technique. Does he feel threatened? lol
