Best QBs ever drafted by Saints (1 Viewer)

While not “Drafted” Jake Delhome was picked up as an UDFA. Still Archie, Bulger, Delhome; pretty bad considering.
Yeah, there's not a lot to choose from. We got Brooks from GB so can't even go there. Delhomme's the past QB that got the furthest albeit with another team (and, that's, of course, a whole OTHER story). So if we slightly change the question to a QB that wasn't first with a different team, it's Delhomey.

Only Archie and Bulger have had decent NFL success.
Bulger is actually pretty close to Archive in total NFL passing yards (~23,000 yards).

3rd is Dave Wilson with ~7000 yards
4th is Steve Ramsey with ~6400 yards

The other semi-notable ones would be:
Bobby Scott ~2800 yards
Edd Haggert ~2700 yards
Danny Wuerffel ~2100 yards
J.T. O'Sullivan ~1800 yards
Mike Buck ~790 yards
Doug Nussmeier ~450 yards

Well, in fairness to the Saints, we really haven't had to draft a QB high since 2006. Obviously, the need to find Drew's heir is upon us, but for a long time we've had one of the top 3 QBs in almost any given year on the roster. Statistically, Drew won't be in that category this year b/c of his injuries and the weird slow start due to not having a proper offseason or preseason, but I bet he plays like one of the top QBs (if not the best) in the playoffs. It's true the Saints under Archie never amounted to much, but that should not take away from his brilliance. If he had gone to a good team, I have no doubt he'd have become a legend. He was an absolute stud coming out of college, but the Saints were so poorly run as a franchise and had such a lack of talent on defense and, well, overall, Manning couldn't by himself make up the deficit. And you have to remember, he played in the years when there wasn't the kind of free agency movement you have nowadays. It was much harder and took a lot longer to improve a bad team back then. It had to be done through multiple good drafts, and our drafting record absolutely stunk until Jim Finks became the GM in 1986, after Bum Philips had already traded Archie away to the former Houston Oilers for an underperforming Leon Gray (O lineman) so he could start a washed up Ken Stabler. Now those were sad days for the Saints.

This discussion has to be tempered by two factors the longevity and brilliance of Brees and the absence of busts because we are not drafting quarterbacks in the top three rounds. Having the same hall of fame quarterback for the last 14 seasons delayed the drafting of a QB. Other than that Bobby Hebert was a USFL import, Jeff Blake was a free agent success prior to injury, Aaron Brooks was a trade of moderate success in the Haslet era, and Archie is the peak of Saints drafted quarterbacks playing with an abysmal cast. While Marc Bulger is the number two due to his success with the Rams and notably being one of the quarterbacks drafted ahead of Tom Brady, at least we didn't cut Tom Brady.

You guys saying it’s brutal are way off. The lack of picks spent on QBs over the years is actually a sign of quality. We haven’t had to go fishing for one year in and year out like many teams.

When Marc Bulger is the 2nd greatest QB ever drafted in franchise history, yeah I'd say that qualifies as brutal. You can quantify it any way you'd like but it's still not great. Does any team in the NFL have a worse one-two punch than Archie and Bulg Dawg? Serious question.

It would only be brutal if they were attempting to draft franchise QBs and whiffing constantly like so many teams do. The Saints have drafted 1 QB in the first round in their entire history. One. If your argument is teams like Atlanta are better at picking QBs because they drafted Vick and Ryan, great, make that argument. They have nothing to show for it.

player to be named later :) crossing fingers we find one in the next couple drafts lol

Cleveland in the last 25 years have spent 4 or 5 first round picks on QBs worse than Bulger.

So who has been playing quarterback since then? Oh just a few people:

The list (via Pro Football Talk):

Couch, Ty Detmer, Doug Pederson, Spergon Wynn, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia, Luke McCown, Trent Dilfer, Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson, Ken Dorsey, Brady Quinn, Bruce Gradkowski, Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Brandon Weeden, Thaddeus Lewis, Jason Campbell, Brian Hoyer, Johnny Manziel, Connor Shaw, Josh McCown, Austin Davis, Robert Griffin III, Cody Kessler, DeShone Kizer, Kevin Hogan.

Testament to the ineptitude of the Saints, pre-revival. Let's let history lie where it belongs and focus on the future...

Worst I could think of is Jacksonville, with Byron Leftwich and David Garrard...
