We had the #1 defense in the LEAGUE in '91 and '92 WITH Bobby.. both times we got blown out in the first playoff game. As much as I loved Mora, he could not gameplan a playoff game to save his life.

1991, 27-20 Falclowns. No disrespect but I wouldn't call that a blowout. Can't remember exactly but there was a b.s. penalty against the Saints late in the game. They were driving to score to tie it up but Hebert threw a pick from the 30is falclown yard line.

Too bad we were in the same division as the 49ers with those teams. Had he made to the big game we would have won it. He owned the AFC and had like a like atwo year winning streak against them.

As far as the 49ers, I do believe the Saints won the division over them in '91.

If you replace Hebert with Brooks or Brees '90 to '92, then we're talking a title or two, or three.

you are correct, sir. but by "blown out", i was speaking more of the defense. I could never understand how a defense that gave up an average of 13 points a game during the season and a total of 18 touchdowns the entire year(!) gets 27 put on them by the Falcons and 36 by the Eagles. They just seemed to abandon everything that got them there and played very tentative. The 61 yard pass that put Atlanta ahead was the final nail in the coffin.

20 years later and I am still fuming.

We'll never know now. But our defense that year, a lot less would have been needed from him to make a SB run. That was our best shot to make it under the Jim Mora era.

That was really the year Wayne Martin came into his own, and having such a disruptive lineman backed up by the dome patrol was scary.

That was a really fun defense to watch.

Indeed they were. Offenses would struggle to gain anything. I would be surprised whenever a running play gained positive yards. And anytime an opposng QB dropped back, I was expecting Swilling or Rickey to get there.

The pass defense was meh if a quarterback had time, but they rarely did. That defense was fun. Fans would go nuts. And they were always on the field, but still held it down.

Yeah I was only 10 the year that Hebert held out so I didn't quite grasp how big of a deal the situation was. This was a great read and gave me a whole different outlook on what Hebert was doing and the impact it had on the landscape of today's NFL.

It's amazing that "Plan B" lasted so long. What an awful free agency setup.

Yes the Saints one the division once in the Montana era, had they been in a different division they would have had several division titles.

Yep if you look at 1991 I believe we were like 8-1 with Hebert and 3-4 with Walsh.

Not only were we in the wrong division,we were in the wrong conference. I'll go to my grave
believing if we had been in the AFC during the Dome Patrol days,we would have appeared
in a minimum of three Super Bowls. The Denver team that was blown out by the Niners 55-10
lost to us 42-0 earlier in the season. Starting in 1985 and ending in 1997,the team that won
the NFCCG was almost a lock to win the Super Bowl. The quality of teams was huge
between the conferences and peaked in the late 80's. Imho,John Elway doesn't get the chance
to play in and lose 3 Super Bowls early in his career if Denver were in the NFC.

Mora had an unbelievable record against the AFC.. in one 3-year period his record was 12-0 (1987-1989). From '87 thru '92, he was 20-4.
