N/S Brian Mitchell HOF? (2 Viewers)

Fwiw, I met Biran Mitchell a few times at ULL when he led the Cajuns to some of their best seasons at that point in their history. Just a cool and classy guy to talk to. He was one of the GOAT special teamers and did it over quite a long period of time. If there were a special teams category for the HOF, he would easily get in.

My stepbrother played with him at USL. I used to talk with him at practices. Really nice guy and a great football player. He should make it for his return abilities. Hester passed him up, but he's been waiting longer.

I actually saw him set the (at that time) rushing record vs. Tulane. Damn, I’m old. 😉
You’re not the only one — I can still remember the times he and Tulane QB Terrence Jones went head-to-head trading TDs. Played each other twice, IIRC. Lotsa points scored in those games!

Brian Mitchell was a great player not IMO HoF materiel, but close.

But more important than my opinion, are two question I have of the OP...

1) Did you nominate Brian Mitchell for the HoF?
2) Did you know that as a fan you can?

no and no

one of the comments to the article was "always very good, never elite" which may or may not describe Brian Mitchell but definitely describes some already in the Hall of Fame

Yep, and he was about as elite as you can get for a special teamer. There are only a handful off the top of my head you can really say that about.

From Wiki:

NFL records
  • Most career kickoff return yards: 14,014
  • Most career punt return yards: 4,999
  • Most career total return yards: 19,013
He is currently second on the NFL's all-time list in all-purpose yardage with 23,330 yards, behind Jerry Rice. He is also first all-time for combined yardage for a non-wide receiver. His 13 special teams touchdowns are second in NFL history, behind Devin Hester, and his nine punt return touchdowns are third behind Eric Metcalf with 10, and Hester with 14. Mitchell was ranked the second greatest specialist in NFL history by NFL Network's NFL Top 10 Return Aces.

just one yard away from 5K in punt return yards!

Those games were track meets. Fun times. He played at Plaquemine Senior HIgh but born in Leesville. My guess his dad was in the Army at Fort Polk.

I would say that only describes a very very small minority in the Hall of Fame like Fred Dean.
