N/S Bucs Releasing Shaq Barrett (1 Viewer)

I don’t think the move saves them any space. He had a $14m cap charge and $26m dead money, so they actually have $12m less space this year.

What it does is open up future space. They avoid paying him a $15m option bonus, so it saves them that amount plus his other 2024 salary/bonus over two years ($26m cap hit this year versus $43m spread over two years).

Cam Jordan's $16,966,897 cap hit in 2023 equates to $8,483,448.50 per sack. Jordan currently carries a $23,284,250 cap hit in 2024.

I think at this point he's an run stuffer with who still creates pressure but doesn't necessary always hit home or the QB runs into the other defender, because of his presence. It's crazy because when he was drafted I never thought he would be a good sack player but a run stuffer, I was wrong. There was plenty of time this year, I personally felt, that he close on many occasions. But also to your point I think Cam Jordan is getting the Brees treatment. Mickey seems to really have been rewarding home town hero's lately.

The best run stuffer in the league isn't worth half of $23,284,250.

I’m reading that they will make him a post June cut so they will save 4.9m this year. Every site has his dead cap listed at 9.2m this year and next year with a post June cut. That adds up to 18.4m but it’s 26m this if he’s not a post June cut. Where did that other 7.6m go? 26m-18.4=7.6m. I’m still trying to learn the ins and outs of the cap.

If they make him a post June 1 cut, they would carry his current $14.2m cap hit until June 1. On June 2, the cap hit for 2023 would become $9.3m ($4.9m savings) and then the rest of his dead cap would accelerate into next year ($17.4m).

The confusion probably comes up because sites may not be accounting for the restructuring cap hits from 2026 and 2027 accelerating into 2025. Without considering the acceleration, it looks like:

2025 $9.3m
2026 $5.5m
2027 $2.6m

But the way the cap works, dead money will either accelerate into the current year with a normal release or accelerate into the following year with a post June 1 release. If you add up the three cap hits above, you'll get the $17.4m cap hit for 2025.

As a side note, you have to ignore the option bonus column above because they haven't paid that bonus yet, otherwise the dead money would increase to the amounts shown in the dead money column (they would have $29m in dead money in 2025 if they paid the option bonus this year, which they won't do if they release him).

Love Cam Jordan, and love what he has meant for the Saints. However, Brees at 75% made players around him better, that’s not the case with Jordan.

I was fine pushing some of those contracts into the future, when Brees was still with the team, but it’s time to stop with the crap now!

Thank you. So the dead cap next year will be higher than 9.2m which is where the rest of the money will go. OTC was confusing the hell out of me lol.

If he's the best run stuffer in the league he is easily worth that. But, I don't think he's the best run stuffer in the league. At this point he's an average pass rusher and a very good run stuffer. He's probably overpaid a bit for what he does on the field, unless he bounces back and has a better year next year, but part of what he is paid for is his leadership qualities. Cam is also unfortunately still the best DE on the team so they really couldn't afford to let go of what he does on the field. Although, I will say that Granderson is close to Cam and may pass him up this year, but they don't really have anyone close to those two in reserve.

In addition to being their best DE despite his decline, they could not afford to let him go because they need all the leaders they can get on this team and at this point all they really have in terms of vocal leaders are Cam, Demario, and Mathieu. And all of them are getting close to the end of their careers. It's time for younger guys to step up into leadership roles. Normally, you count on your QB for a lot of that, but I don't think Carr is that guy.

In short, the Saints don't want to cut Cam. It's why they gave him a new contract last year. So whether or not they could cut him given the cap ramifications is really a moot point.
