Buying Retail (3 Viewers)

Buying warranties on consumer electronics is generally such a bad financial decision.
Depending on the price, TVs might be worth it. Mine has a 5 year warranty, but it came free as part of a promotion at Costco. But for other electronics, I agree.

Generally, I only consider extended warranties on products with moving parts. And then I try to negotiate a lower price, or extended period. We bought a Norditrack treadmill and elliptical and got the warranty on both, at a reduced price than what was offered. It's a form of insurance I guess.

sure, they all mention it, and mostly drop it when you say no thanks

and they'd frame it differently "hey, about one in 1000 does have a problem and needs to be replaced. Item's $500, warranty is $15, do you want it?

Circuit City went full Boiler Room
I worked at Cowboy Maloney for a short while. Selling warranties is where the salesperson gets their money.

A blender has moving parts. Walmart asks if you want insurance on a $20 piece of mostly plastic. That’s always a bad idea to purchase insurance for these kinds of items and the people who do that remind me of an ex girlfriend.

If it’s your $1500 phone, I can see insuring that.

The Wal-mart I usually shop at doesn't ask about buying a warranty on small household items like that. It did ask me about buying a warranty on a TV, which I declined.

It’s a brief question I’ve seen on the self checkout when you buy even cheap consumer electronics. It’s unobtrusive enough to hardly notice.

So I'm in the grocery store and see that grapes are on sale for 99 cents a pound

Great deal

I get a big bag and during checkout I notice they ring up at $3.99 a pound

So I say, "Excuse me, these are supposed to be on sale for 99 cents a pound"

She says, "Oh, that's our digital only sale"

I thought about telling her "Oh, then you can put these back" but didn't want to be that guy. I paid for the grapes (12 bucks!) but I was mad about it.

I HATE online only coupons
