Cal DC Peter Sirmon will be Saints LB coach (22 Viewers)

Hopefully we can develop Foskey. He's got the range/speed to be the other dropper or Sam LB. Dude ran a 4.5 and it's kind of what he did at ND before we tried to turn him into a 4-3 DE. Shame on us
Just like Baun and Ellis, we draft talented players then play them to their weakness.

You're right on the 4-2-5 and I just figured out why. No matter where Staley has gone he's asked his Edge guys to drop between 200-245 times. Mostly it's his Sam LB that does the most dropping. For Rams it was Leonard Floyd and Chargers in 2022 it was Kyle Van Noy. Both well over 100 coverage drops

We don't have a Sam...but we do have an Alontae Taylor and that slot DB in the big 4-2-5 is essentially a Sam LB.

Making that the base defense while we transition makes the most sense.

So while it will be a 4-2-5 in numbering it will still function like the 3-3-5. By that I mean it will still have a NT and two 4i's with Granderson on one edge and then Alontae being the blitzer/dropper on the other edge.

When we decide to run his dime looks you probably drop Werner and add Cam Jordan opposite Granderson. So it's Granderson, 4i, nt, 4i, Cam. Davis is your MLB and then your 5 DB's.

We need a NT and more depth at DB/S. You can take a chance on a mid round undersized rusher for Sam later in the draft but we're going to need that NT.

Taylor is going to be disruptive in this defense...but we'll also need him to stay healthy since he's such a core piece.
I like how Fangio will get into those penny (5-1) looks from his nickel personnel, he waits for the offense to show their hand before putting a fifth guy on the LOS. From what I’ve read, college teams are moving away from Tite fronts to even fronts because the Tite front is soft on the edges in the run game. Defenses can be manipulated by teams playing three wide receivers, the Packers abused the Rams in the run game in the playoffs a few years back (notable that Donald was out, and we don’t have Donald, so we would be vulnerable to a similar attack). The Rams had to adjust by bringing a safety into the box, and the natural consequence was a deep PA TD pass to Lazard.

The even 4-2-5 front with the edges out wide keeps the edges as force defenders and pass rushers, with the two DT’s playing gap and a half to limit inside runs. The edges stay out of conflict and can play fast.

All of these moves are making me excited!
Young, fresh blood coming into the NFL and they'll be hungry to make names for themselves by generating success.

If Cam is moved to OLB I'm sure he'd appreciate having a Cal bear coach on staff. I wonder if this is LB's in general or ILB and the'll be adding an OLB coach.
If we are forced to play Cam at OLB...next year will be another bad year for our D...
He can't run at this stage of his career...

It wouldn’t be the first time the Saints have messed up an edge rusher one way or another. Either they draft a bust/ injury machine or try to turn them into drop back players who can’t cover. I blame DA for it. He was brilliant with defensive backs and inadequate with front seven personnel.

The Sam LB in this front is tasked mostly w/ setting the edge. Cam still does that perfectly fine. He's too small to be one of the interior defenders in the 4I. So you either play him as the base Sam outside the TE where his 1 role is to set a firm edge on run downs Or you use him in a Brandon Graham role where his job is only to come in and rush the passer.

This notion that he can't play OLB is incorrect. Staley has experience with OLB's in the bosa/Mack size level (over 270) and as well as the undersized rushers he had in Rams. He simply ask them to drop in coverage less.

I read that article too. I'm trying to get a good bead on how to counter the counters and what we'd need. The down safety gets put in a bad position because he has to crash A then strafe outside from that position. So I think you'd need a SS who can flow well and make secure tackles in run defense. On the other end I saw where the adjustement was just to put your edges in Wide 9 to keep everything in the box so you can stilll run a tite from it.

We will just have to disagree!
It was pretty clear that Cam was a liability when he was on the field last year.
He has always had a habit of crashing inside instead of setting the edge.
I just never decided if it was how DA ran his stunts or not... but we have been giving up the edge for a while.

It really doesn't do any good to argue about who is playing where until we get through training camp to see who will be on the team & where they will be playing...

ok

I don’t know, it just feels like every coaching move is 100x more impactful now with CKM. I don’t know if it’s the fresh start or just the guys he’s selected but he’s winning me over with these moves and it’s exciting to watch

Also have a built in , in house, experienced DC replacement for Staley if he fails?
