I think the team has enough holes as is to think about messing with what is working. They have made too many questionable decisions personnel wise that they are in a situation where they can't afford to mess with what is working as is, even if you are not getting first round caliber play from Penning (although getting adequate play from him is way better than having nothing at all). They should just work with Penning and Fuaga as bookends... this will at least allow them to focus on other positions with their premium picks, and stabilize the Oline. That's not totally accurate. Several coaches already confirmed (specificaly our OL Coach) that the plan for Penning was always to give hiim a fresh start at RT. I also don't think there was ever any competition. There were several moments during camp where Penning would have horrific days, but the next day he was with the 1's. It wasn't until late in camp that he started doing some 2nd team work, but I think that was so they could see who their best backup option was at RT.
Penning is upgradeable and a small nugget by Loomis that I hope comes to fruition is that when he was asked about Ram and what the contract alteration meant, he said it was Ram's choice. Potentially he could comeback.
As far as my opinion, Penning is a backup RT and 6th OL in heavy formations.. It would be nice if the team could secure the services of a vet LT, so they could move Fuaga back to RT. In the event of injury Fuaga could slide back to LT and Penning would be RT.
It'll be fun to see how they handle it.
