There's quote from Sundays game from players that suggest their biggest opposition to playing well is that they don't practice hard enough. Specifically Mathieu mentions how w/ the Chiefs they would run roughly 500 plays a day (probably an exaggeration) while during his three year tenure here, most of our practices are walkthroughs and maybe 30-40 plays a day. He points out how that half-speed walk through is potentially one of the reasons they are a bad tackling team because angles/speed change during the game vs what they're exposed to in practice. When Rizzi was first hired he was asked about the changes he could make. While he mentioned a few, he said it would be impossible to do a complete overhaul and they'd have to ride w/ a lot of the program that was already in place.

Regardless, whomever is hired they probably need to put an emphasis on practicing at full speed as often as possible to counterbalance the limited access to players that coaches get under the new CBA. The best teams compete at full speed, because half speed sets you up for injuries. Mark Sanchez made a beautiful point about that during the game yesterday.

I recall Brees mentioning during the 09 season that talked about how on Friday's they scrimmaged hard. 1st team O vs 1st team D full speed.... Need to get back to that.

Why on earth would they not practice at full speed? Serious question. Someone help me make sense of it because it sounds insane to me.

Maybe because they had to spend so much time teaching the offense to all of the backups. No sense in having them run the wrong plays at full speed.

The teams are also very limited on contact practices, I forget the total but it is less than one per week (and once you've used them, you're out).

Thank you for the explanation

CBA pretty much eliminated that possibility. The one Brees helped negotiate, where he wanted an exemption from the franchise tag.... they made it to where there is like only 10 padded practices during the regular season. I don't know how much that changed since then. But there will be no hard scrimmages during the season.

Edit: Regular Season and Postseason Practices. During the regular season, padded practices for all players shall be limited to a total of fourteen, eleven of which must be held during the first eleven weeks of the regular season, and three of which must be held during the remaining six weeks of the regular season. Postseason: Teams can hold one padded practice per week, starting the week after their last regular season game.

so maybe it is possible..

True and not true. No, he didn't build this program. But he's also getting out coached every single game. Yesterday, he just got out coached by Antinio Pierce who is one of the worst head coaches in the NFL. And you can certainly judge that.

Ok...cool - still don't want him as the permanent HC

When you watch the Saints with Dennis Allen, you knew he was in over his head. He just didnt have the HC gene. You cant define IT, but you know it when you see it. Allen, just didnt have it. He lacked everything youd want from a HC. He seemed like a DC on the sideline, and there was no HC.

Rizzi is a ST coach with a red flag in his pocket. He aint a HC. Some teams want an offensive minded coach. Some a defensive minded coach. No one wants a special teams minded coach. Its not a thing.

And honestly yelling does work for some interims. Interims pretty much have to yell, create some artificial motivation. But it wears off pretty quickly, as most artificial motivation does. And it has here. Weve lost 59-10 the last 2 weeks.

if they have been doing "tag" sessions the past few weeks.. then the reason behind that is simple..

stop getting injured lol.

Most of the team quit at half time yesterday...

That is on Rizzi.
I respect your answer, but I’d say it’s on the players. A coach, interim or not, can only do so much to motivate grown men. That’s on them as to how much effort they give. I’ll go a little further and say what I haven’t heard anyone say: they’re losing without saying they’re losing for better draft position. Or, they’ve checked out. It’s not going to help much, but what, at this point, will winning do? Just my two cents

I ripped the veteran team leaders in another post...

Yes you can and I hope they don't give him the head coaching job here.
