June 22nd, 2024 - Erik McCoy - Number 78

Countdown to Kickoff: Erik McCoy is the Saints Player of Day 78

1719078022216.png

We’re counting down the days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 regular season by highlighting each player to wear the day’s corresponding jersey number. And with 78 days to go until Week 1’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers, our Saints Player of the Day is Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy.

Let’s get to know him a bit better and touch on his goals for 2024:

  • Name (Age): Erik McCoy (26)
  • Position: Center/guard
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 303 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.93
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $6,520,000
  • College: Texas A&M
  • Drafted: Second round in 2019 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 6 years
McCoy has been the most consistent member of the offensive line since the Saints traded up to draft him back in 2019, and he was rewarded for his efforts with his first Pro Bowl nod in 2023. This was also the first time he’s remained healthy for a full 17-game season since the schedule expanded in 2021. So his goals for 2024 are clear — just repeat that performance.

June 23rd, 2024 - Justin Herron - Number 77

Countdown to Kickoff: Justin Herron is the Saints Player of Day 77

1719178769113.png

Day 77 of our countdown to the New Orleans Saints season opener lands at the offensive tackle position with newly-acquired Justin Herron, who currently owns the No. 77 jersey. Herron, a former Wake Forest standout, spent his first four years with the New England Patriots and the Las Vegas Raiders playing a total of 35 games in his NFL career.

Before we get into more detail on Herron and his potential role with the Saints in 2024, let’s make sure to highlight him as our Saints Player of the Day.

  • Name (Age): Justin Herron (28)
  • Position: Offensive tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-5, 290 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 3.99
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $985,000
  • College: Wake Forest
  • Drafted: Round 6, Pick 195 in 2020 (New England Patriots)
  • NFL experience: 5 years
Herron is one of the many offensive linemen acquired in free agency by the Saints, a group that was brought in to compete for starting roles or to provide depth along the line. Herron, an offensive tackle by stature, has been provided all the opportunity in the world by joining the Saints.

Before the addition of Taliese Fuaga, the team had two huge voids on both ends of the line. Right now, former first-round pick Trevor Penning has the inside track on the right side of the line but by no means has he solidified the job. Penning struggled mightily in the beginning of last season leading to his benching early on. Herron could move Penning off his spot come training camp, however there will be competition for it. Free agent acquisition Oli Udoh, former sixth-round pick Landon Young and this year’s seventh rounder Josiah Ezirim will be in the mix for that job as well. It’s likely that the team will carry nine offensive linemen come September which could also allow Herron to make the team as a depth player behind the starting five.

76 days until Saints' season opener: Every player to wear No. 76

We’re highlighting every New Orleans Saints player who has worn the No. 76 jersey as we count down the days to kickoff for the 2024 season. Week 1’s Saints-Panthers game is 76 days away, so that’s where we’re picking up our countdown.

The number currently belongs to Trajan Jeffcoat, an undrafted rookie who played college football at Arkansas and Missouri. The most notable player to wear No. 76 to most Saints fans might be Jonathan Goodwin, the starting center on the Super Bowl XLIV-winning team. But older fans might recall right tackle Don Morrison, who started 92 of his 94 games with the Saints in the 1970’s while protecting Archie Manning.

1719409383004.png

The countdown to the New Orleans Saints 2024 regular season kickoff is underway as we highlight every player who wears the corresponding jersey number of the day. With now 74 days remaining before the Saints’ Week 1 game against the Carolina Panthers, offensive lineman Olisaemeka Udoh is today’s Saints Player of the Day.

Let’s talk about his objectives for 2024 and how important his play will be in the weeks leading up to the season.

  • Name (Age): Oli Udoh (27)
  • Position: Offensive guard/tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-6, 320 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.14
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $2,000,000
  • College: Elon
  • Drafted: 6th round in 2019 (Minnesota Vikings)
  • NFL experience: 6 years
Udoh started 18 games for the Minnesota Vikings over a 5-year period after being selected in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. In 2021, he started 16 games (14 at right guard, two at left tackle) allowing only one sack that season. This would be the same season where new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak spent his lone year calling plays for the Vikings.

June 28th, 2024 - Josiah Ezirim - Number 72

Countdown to Kickoff: Josiah Ezirim is the Saints Player of Day 72

1719719407707.png

We’re down to 72 days until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 regular season, which makes the player of the day Josiah Ezirim. The current owner of the No. 72 jersey was drafted earlier this year out of Eastern Kentucky, and he’s facing an uphill battle to make the team. Let’s get to know him a little better:

  • Name (Age): Josiah Ezirim (23)
  • Position: Offensive tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-6, 329 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.50
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $819,604
  • College: Eastern Kentucky
  • Drafted: 7th round in 2024 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: Rookie
Ezirim played on the defensive line through high school and his first couple of years in college football, until his coaches convinced him to try out at offensive tackle in 2021. He excelled in that role and started 19 games at right tackle to close out his career at Eastern Kentucky, ending his 2023 season with spots on the All-American second team and All-UAC Team.

June 29th, 2024 - Ryan Ramzcyk - Number 71

Countdown to Kickoff: Ryan Ramczyk is the Saints Player of Day 71

1719720366262.png

There are 71 days to go until the New Orleans Saints open their 2024 season with the Carolina Panthers, which means the current owner of the No. 71 jersey is our Saints Player of the Day. But have we already seen the last of Ryan Ramczyk?

Let’s look back at Ramczyk’s career thus far, his current situation, and what could be ahead for him:

  • Name (Age): Ryan Ramczyk (30)
  • Position: Offensive tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-6, 314 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: N/A
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $12,293,321
  • College: Wisconsin
  • Drafted: 1st round in 2017 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 8 years
Ramczyk was everything the Saints hoped he would be when they drafted him. He’s repeatedly won Pro Bowl and All-Pro attention through his career while playing at a high level, and for most of his time with the Saints he rarely missed a snap. It’s just a shame that his degenerative knee condition is likely cutting his career short. The Saints are giving him time to rehab away from the team, but it doesn’t sound like he’s expected to play again this season, if ever again.

If this is the end of the road, Ramczyk will have an opportunity to retire with the Saints, but don’t expect that to be processed until 2025. The Saints would likely put Ramczyk on injured reserve this season before circling back next offseason to give him as much time as possible to make a decision. If he does retire they would process his retirement just like they handled those for Drew Brees and Malcolm Jenkins. His future base salaries in 2025 and 2026 would be reduced to the minimum with whatever’s over from his signing bonus and past restructures being split between the current and next-year salary caps as dead money.

June 30th, 2024 - Trevor Penning - Number 70

Countdown to Kickoff: Trevor Penning is the Saints Player of Day 70

1719756696890.png

We’re counting down the days to kickoff for the New Orleans Saints’ 2024 season, and with 70 days to go that makes Trevor Penning our Saints Player of the Day. What does No. 70 need to do to salvage a rough start to his career in 2024? Let’s break it down.

  • Name (Age): Trevor Penning (30)
  • Position: Offensive tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-7, 325 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.95
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $3,857,268
  • College: Northern Iowa
  • Drafted: 1st round in 2022 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 3 years
Things have not gone as hoped for Penning. He lost his rookie year to injuries. His second season was shuttered after six hard-to-watch starts. And now he’s switching positions in Year 3, moving from left tackle to the right side. Early returns at spring practices were encouraging, and it does seem like the new staff — offensive line coach John Benton and senior assistant Rick Dennison, joining assistant Jahri Evans — are better connecting with Penning than their predecessors.

July 1st, 2024 - Kyler Baugh - Number 69

Countdown to Kickoff: Kyler Baugh is the Saints Player of Day 69

1719847732963.png

We’ve got 69 days to go until the New Orleans Saints open up their 2024 regular season, which makes the current owner of the No. 69 jersey our Saints Player of the Day. That’s rookie defensive lineman Kyler Baugh, so let’s get to know him better before diving into realistic goals for him in 2024:

  • Name (Age): Kyler Baugh (22)
  • Position: Defensive tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-2, 305 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.56
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $798,333
  • College: Minnesota
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2024 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: Rookie
The Saints signed Baugh as an undrafted free agent out of Minnesota, guaranteeing just $25,000 in his rookie contract. For perspective, former Colorado tight end Dallin Holker led the team with $235,000 in guarantees. Baugh was a solid starter at Minnesota the last two years (where he was teammates with safety Jordan Howden, who the Saints drafted last year) but he’s facing a tough road to making the cut in New Orleans.

July 2nd, 2024 - Mark Evans II - Number 68

Countdown to Kickoff: Mark Evans II is the Saints Player of Day 68

1719930574434.png
There are 68 days left until the New Orleans Saints start their 2024 regular season, which means the current owner of the No. 68 jersey is our Saints Player of the Day. That’s Mark Evans II, a second-year pro from Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The young offensive lineman must take a big step forward in Year 2 if he’s going to avoid being lost in the shuffle. Let’s get to know him better:

  • Name (Age): Mark Evans II (24)
  • Position: Offensive tackle/guard
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 295 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 3.62
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $795,000
  • College: Arkansas at Pine Bluff
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2023 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 1 year
Evans received more guarantees in his rookie contract last year ($241,000) than any other undrafted free agent in the Saints’ 2023 or 2024 classes, including this year’s much-hyped tight end Dallin Holker ($235,000). He was asked to move inside after playing left tackle in college and tried out at both guard spots during the 2023 preseason, logging 31 snaps at right guard and 54 on the left side.

While he was waived during final roster cuts at the end of August, the Saints did initially re-sign Evans to their practice squad, only to waive him again on Sept. 4. He tried out for the Houston Texans on Sept. 12 and returned to New Orleans on Sept. 27. He was never called up from the practice squad for a regular season game, and it remains to be seen how the new offensive coaching staff feels about him. He didn’t participate in team drills at OTAs or minicamp while rehabbing an undisclosed injury.

July 3rd, 2024 - Landon Young = Number 67

Countdown to Kickoff: Landon Young is the Saints Player of Day 67

1720016973368.png

We’re on to Day 67 of our countdown to the start of the New Orleans Saints’ 2024 regular season, which makes the current owner of the No. 67 jersey our Saints Player of the Day. So what are realistic goals for Landon Young in 2024? What’s the vision for him to make the team and help out this year? And what’s brought him to this point? Let’s answer each of those questions.

  • Name (Age): Landon Young (26)
  • Position: Offensive tackle/guard
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-7, 321 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.18
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $1,097,445
  • College: Kentucky
  • Drafted: Sixth round in 2021 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 4 years
Young played left tackle almost exclusively in college, but he’s cross-trained on the right side during his time with the Saints, and there’s been some speculation that he could join the left guard competition this summer. He’s only started seven games through three years and has dealt with a couple of injuries, so that’s a factor in evaluating him, too.

While he’s logged more snaps at right tackle (257) with the Saints than at left tackle (155), Young was primarily working as Taliese Fuaga’s backup on the left side at minicamp and OTAs this spring. He does have that versatility to plug into either spot, though, so he shouldn’t be seen as limited to one side or the other.

July 4th, 2024 - Shane Lemieux - Number 66

Countdown to Kickoff: Shane Lemieux is the Saints Player of Day 66

1720102959763.png

We’ve got 66 days to go until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2024 regular season, which makes the current owner of the No. 66 jersey our Saints Player of the Day: Shane Lemieux.

The former New York Giants draft pick signed with the Saints this spring and entered a competition to start early on at OTAs. So what are realistic expectations for him in 2024? Let’s get to know him a little better.

  • Name (Age): Shane Lemieux (27)
  • Position: Offensive guard/center
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 310 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 6.64
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $1,055,000
  • College: Oregon
  • Drafted: Fifth round in 2020 (New York Giants)
  • NFL experience: 5 years
Lemieux played left guard in college and for most of his career in the NFL, though he’s had a little experience at right guard and center. He started most of his rookie season at left guard with the Giants but he allowed five sacks in nine games and was limited to a combined 147 snaps on offense over the next three years.

A big part of those absences was due to injuries. A September knee injury took Lemieux out for the entire 2021 season. In 2022, he suffered a preseason toe injury in August and wasn’t able to return until late in December, only to aggravate the same injury and miss the rest of the year. And his 2023 season ended with a torn biceps in October. Durability has been a major challenge for him.
