Countdown To Kickoff - 2024 New Orleans Saints (1 Viewer)

Thanks for doing this, Artifactual. I look forward for this every year, I get to see all the new players and read up on them and I get to see some of the older players that I forget about.

You're Welcome. This wasn't my thread in years past. I always loved it for the same reasons you stated. Once I saw we were inside 100 days, and nobody had posted, I picked up on it.

July 18th, 2024 - D'Marco Jackson - Number 52

Countdown to Kickoff: D'Marco Jackson is the Saints Player of Day 52

1721304298662.png

There are 52 days left until the New Orleans Saints kick off their regular season, which makes D’Marco Jackson our Saints Player of the Day. The current holder of the No. 52 jersey made the 53-man roster last season after missing his rookie year with an injury, but he’s facing more competition if he’s going to pull off that feat again in 2024:

  • Name (Age): D’Marco Jackson (22)
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-1, 233 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.30
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $1,064,229
  • College: Appalachian State
  • Drafted: 5th round in 2022 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 3 years
Jackson had a good year in his role. He was one of 19 players who recovered a fumble and recovered it for a touchdown; his fellow linebacker Nephi Sewell blocked a punt against the Carolina Panthers, and Jackson was in position to make a play. Zack Baun led the Saints with 385 special teams snaps and Jackson was right there with him at 384, and his 8 tackles in the kicking game were second-most on the team behind J.T. Gray (11).

So we know he can play in the game’s third phase. But Jackson needs to show he can be an asset on defense, too. He didn’t get many opportunities behind Demario Davis, Pete Werner, Baun and Sewell. While Sewell is recuperating from a late-season knee injury, the Saints did sign Willie Gay Jr. in free agency, which is going to keep Jackson lower on the depth chart.

July 19th, 2024 - Cesa Ruiz - Number 51

Countdown to Kickoff: Cesar Ruiz is the Saints Player of Day 51

1721400092816.png

We are now at 51 days until the start of the New Orleans Saints’ regular season, which makes today’s Saints Player of the Day: Cesar Ruiz. Will the former first-round pick ascend his way to the top in Year 5?

  • Name (Age): Cesar Ruiz (25)
  • Position: Offensive center/guard
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 316 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.02
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $4,450,000
  • College: Michigan
  • Drafted: Round 1 in 2020 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 5 years
Ruiz entered the league as one of the more polished prospects in his draft class. As a three-year starter for Michigan and a former number-one overall recruit at his position, Ruiz felt as close to a sure thing as you can get. When the Saints selected Ruiz in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, the idea for the team was to play Ruiz at the guard position next to Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy. Prior to this, Ruiz had no experience at this spot at any point in his football career which led to an adjustment period early on.

With the 2024 season on the horizon, it has been reported by multiple sources that Ruiz is in the best shape of his life after cutting some weight this offseason, and with the excitement around Klint Kubiak’s offense, it shouldn’t be a surprise to many if Ruiz has a career year in his fifth season.

July 20th, 2024 - Khalen Saunders - Number 50

Countdown to Kickoff: Khalen Saunders is the Saints Player of Day 50

1721496551915.png

Khalen Saunders is wearing a new jersey number in 2024. He’s the New Orleans Saints Player of Day 50 in our countdown to kickoff in Week 1’s matchup with the Carolina Panthers. Saunders wore No. 99 last year, his first season with the Saints, but he’s switching to No. 50 since Chase Young joined the team and took it from him.

What does a successful season look like for Saunders? Let’s put him under the spotlight in today’s feature.

  • Name (Age): Khalen Saunders (27)
  • Position: Defensive tackle
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-0, 324 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 7.59
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $4,400,000
  • College: Western Illinois
  • Drafted: Round 3 in 2019 (Kansas City Chiefs)
  • NFL experience: 6 years
Saunders’ first season with the Saints could be characterized as good, not great. He didn’t have a sack but he did post the second-most quarterback pressures of his career (14), which is solid for a nose tackle. What really held him back was an underwhelming year in run defense. The Saints were vulnerable up the middle and they finished the year with the 11th-most rushing yards allowed. You’d expect a stronger impact from Saunders as a big body playing on running downs.

July 21st, 2024 - Zach Wood - Number 49

Saints Season Opener Is Seven Weeks From Today!

Countdown to Kickoff: Zach Wood is Saints Player of Day 49

1721563336412.png

There are only 49 days to go until the start of the season for the New Orleans Saints. That makes the Saints’ player of the day long snapper Zach Wood, who plays one of football’s most underrated and not-so-talked about roles on the field.

Here’s a closer look in to the player who dons the jersey number of 49:

  • Name (Age): Zach Wood (31)
  • Position: Long snapper
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-3, 255 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 0.83
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $858,569
  • College: SMU
  • Drafted: UDFA in 2016 (Dallas Cowboys)
  • NFL experience: 8th year
He’s done well for himself. Wood was originally signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent back in 2016, though he was ultimately released in 2017. That obviously wasn’t the end of the road for the former Mustang, as he was signed by the Saints shortly after.

Wood has what’s seen as the most secure job the Saints have to offer within the team at long snapper, recently signing a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the squad through the 2027 season. The deal includes $2.3 million in guarantees and a $1 million signing bonus. It should be noted that total of guarantees makes him the third-highest paid long snapper in the NFL, behind only the New England Patriots’ Joe Cardona ($2.6 million) and the New York Jets’ Thomas Hennessy ($3.165 million).

And while Wood is tied with Hennessy for the most regular season games played among active long snappers (115), his 7 playoff matchups gives him an edge. He’s the most experienced player in the NFL at what he does, and the Saints have been fortunate to have him for so long.

July 22, 2024 - J.T. Gray - Number 48

Countdown to Kickoff: J.T. Gray is the Saints Player of Day 48

1721675498357.png

The countdown to the New Orleans Saints 2024 regular season kickoff is underway as we highlight every player who wears the corresponding jersey number. With now 48 days remaining before the Saints’ Week 1 game against the Carolina Panthers, linebacker J.T. Gray is the Saints Player of the Day:

  • Name (Age): J.T. Gray (28)
  • Position: Safety
  • Height, weight: 6-foot, 202 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 7.90
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $3,480,000
  • College: Mississippi State
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2018 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 7 years
J.T. Gray has been one of the more consistent players for the Saints since his arrival to New Orleans. Although his primary role is as a core special-teamer, Gray’s ascension in that role has allowed his name to ring across the league for a while now. In 2019, Gray received second-team All-Pro honors as a specialist in only his second season in the league, leading the league with 16 tackles on special teams. Gray would follow that up with his second All-Pro selection in 2021, this time with the first-team. He would also get his first Pro Bowl nod that same season, solidifying his status as one of the league’s best.

Gray’s play has continued to impress in the seasons following, enough to earn him a three-year extension with the team in 2023. Not only does his performance on the field do the talking but he’s also been one of the Saints respected leaders in their locker room as one of the team captains each of the last four years.

July 23rd, 2024 - Khaleke Hudson - Number 47

Countdown to Kickoff: Khaleke Hudson is Saints Player of Day 47

1721740631350.png

Just 47 days stand between right now and when the New Orleans Saints open up the 2024 regular season against the Carolina Panthers.
With that, Khaleke Hudson is the Saints Player of the Day 47 in our countdown.

Here’s what to know about Hudson, a newcomer to the Saints who fittingly wears the No. 47 jersey:

  • Name (Age): Khaleke Hudson (26)
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Height, weight: 6-foot, 220 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 7.58
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $1,152,500
  • College: Michigan
  • Drafted: Round 5 in 2020 (Washington Commanders)
  • NFL experience: 5 years
2024 will mark the first year in which Hudson has played for a team in his NFL career not named the Washington Commanders. Hudson is expected to add depth and some value on special teams, something that’s obviously an asset after he factored in on 73% of Washington’s special teams snaps in 2023. The Saints lost special teams linebackers like Zack Baun and Ty Summers in free agency so he could help out in that phase.

He did see more time on the defensive side of the ball in 2023, though, playing in 17 games (8 starts) with 74 tackles (44 solo), five tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, two passes defensed and two quarterback hits.

His versatility that he brings to the table for an NFL team goes back to his college career at Michigan where he played the “Viper” position for the Wolverines. The position is described as one in which the player functions as a hybrid between the linebacker and the safety role.

July 24th, 2024 - Adam Prentice - Number 46

Countdown to Kickoff: Adam Prentice is Saints Player of Day 46

1721826264571.png

There are only 46 days to go until the season kicks off for the New Orleans Saints. This means the Saints’ player of the day is fullback Adam Prentice. The fullback position isn’t a glamorous one, but they serve an important role in the offense.

  • Name (Age): Adam Prentice (27)
  • Position: Fullback
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-0, 245 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 5.66
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $1,130,000
  • College: South Carolina, Colorado State
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2021 (Denver Broncos)
  • NFL experience: 4th year
He recently signed a one-year, $1,130,000 contract to return to the team in March.

This past season he had just two carries for 12 yards while catching two passes for another dozen yards, but he had an untimely fumble and a bad drop. Prentice ended the 2023 campaign with a 38.1 Pro Football Focus player grade. He is going to compete with Zander Horvath, who signed with the Saints in free agency, to be the team’s fullback this season.

But both of them could be sidelined by Taysom Hill if the versatile playmaker can execute the same assignments while wearing all of his other hats. Prentice needs to bounce back in a big way to hold onto his starting job.

July 25th, 2024 - Nephi Sewell - Number 45

Countdown to Kickoff: Nephi Sewell is Saints Player of Day 45

1721908213904.png

With only 45 days to go until the Saints season kicks off, we are inching ever so closer to the star of the NFL season. This makes Nephi Sewell today’s New Orleans Saints Player of the Day. Let’s get to know him better:

  • Name (Age): Nephi Sewell (25)
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-0, 228 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 7.04
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $985,000
  • College: Utah
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2022 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 3rd year
Football is a huge part of the Sewell family. Nephi has three brothers who play professional football. His brothers are Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions, Noah Sewell of the Chicago Bears, and Gabriel Sewell of the Houston Roughnecks. He also had two uncles who played in the NFL.

Sewell went undrafted in 2022 but signed with the Saints. Sewell played a key role on special teams and was a rotational piece on the Saints’ defense this past season. He carved out a role for himself last season defensively but suffered a torn ACL on Dec. 31 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He finished the season with nine tackles and 59 total snaps. Unfortunately, Sewell was placed on the PUP list on July 18 while recovering from that knee injury.

July 26th, 2024 -Isaiah Stalbird - Number 44

Countdown to Kickoff: Isaiah Stalbird is Saints Player of Day 44

1722002450584.png

There are only 44 more days to go until the New Orleans Saints kick off their season against the Carolina Panthers. That makes today’s player of the day rookie linebacker Isaiah Stalbird. Let’s get to know one of the newer members to join the squad:

  • Name (Age): Isaiah Stalbird (24)
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Height, weight: 6-foot 1, 220 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.50
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $798,333
  • College: South Dakota State
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2024 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: Rookie

He played a total of 52 games at both linebacker and safety and amassed 238 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 18 pass deflections, and five forced fumbles. Stalbird signed with the Saints on a three-year, $2,840,000 deal after going undrafted this year. He was guaranteed $110,000 to sign with New Orleans, which is a sizeable investment. Still, it’ll be an uphill battle for Stalbird to earn one of the starting linebacker jobs. His best path forward runs through the special teams units covering punts and kickoffs.

July 27th, 2024 - Matthew Hayball - 43

Countdown to Kickoff: Matthew Hayball is Saints Player of Day 43

1722111248206.png

Our countdown to kickoff for the New Orleans Saints continues with Day 43! Today’s Saints player of the day is punter Matthew Hayball. Let’s get to know the rookie.

  • Name (Age): Matthew Hayball (27)
  • Position: Punter
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-0, 189 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: N/A
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $798,333
  • College: Vanderbilt
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2023 (New Orleans Saints)
  • NFL experience: 1st year
The Saints continued their trend of Australian punters when they signed Hayball to the team. He joins Australian punter Lou Hedley who the team signed last year. It’s worth noting that Hayball’s contract included $35,000 in guarantees whereas Hedley was guaranteed just $10,000 last offseason.

He played three years at Flordia Atlantic before transferring to Vanderbilt. In his final year at Vanderbilt, he punted the ball 57 times for 2,713 yards. With a 47.6 average distance, he ranked in the top-ten in college football for yards per attempt.

The New Orleans Saints are now only 42 days away from kicking off their regular season against the Carolina Panthers. That makes today’s player of the day Kevin Austin Jr. — the Saints didn’t have anyone wearing No. 42 when he joined the team, so this is a good opportunity to highlight Austin, who chose No. 81. Let’s get to know the newest member of the Saints:

  • Name (Age): Kevin Austin Jr. (24)
  • Position: Wide receiver
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-2, 200 pounds

  • College: Notre Dame
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2022 (Jacksonville Jaguars)

Austin is the Saints’ newest member, having signed just before the start of training camp. This was after Austin Suited up for the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. He caught 15 passes for 253 receiving yards, scoring two touchdowns.

Before all of this, Austin attended Notre Dame, where he caught fire his senior year, catching 48 passes for 888 receiving yards. After going undrafted, he signed with the Jaguars. He was eventually released and that is when he signed with the Birmingham Stallions.

1722180045918.png

We’re now at 42 days until the New Orleans Saints season opener against the Carolina Panthers which means we continue with our countdown of every player to wear No. 42 for the Saints. The greatest player to put it on in team history was running back Chuck Muncie. He was the team’s first Pro Bowler, and its first 1,000-yard rusher. Muncie totaled 3,393 rushing yards and 1,086 receiving yards across 59 games with the Saints scoring 29 combined touchdowns) until he was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1980. There he earned two more Pro Bowl nods and led the league with 19 touchdown runs in 1981.
