August 30th, 2024 - Number 9 - Nine Days Until Opening Day For The 2024 Saints Season
Countdown to Kickoff: Currently no Saints player is wearing the Number 9 and won't ever be again!

9 days until Saints' season opener: Every player to wear No. 9

1725031990739.png

While the New Orleans Saints do not officially have any retired numbers at this moment in time, the case to be made for No. 9 and No. 8 are both strong. With Archie Manning being the only to wear 8 and Drew Brees the only to wear 9 since his retirement in 2020, both can be seen as somewhat of a “retired” number of sorts. We all know the legacy of Brees, Super Bowl Champion & SBMVP, two time Offensive Player of the Year, seven time passing yards leader, four time passing touchdowns leader, six time completion percentage leader, 13 time Pro Bowler, one time first team All-Pro and four time second team, and most recently a New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame inductee. In two more years, he will also be a first ballot Hall of Fame inductee, without question, in a year with some of the best in Maurkice Pouncey, Larry Fitzgerald, Frank Gore, and Jason Witten among others.

Statistically? He now is second all-time in career passing yards (80,358), career touchdown passes (571), career pass completions (7,142), and career completion percentage (67.6%). Additionally, he owns six of the top 10 best completion percentage seasons, including all of the top three (2018, 2019, and 2017) as well as fifth (2011), seventh (2009), and ninth (2020). Any passing statistic you can find, he resides among the best of the best to ever play this sport, and his completion percentage numbers for a season may never be touched, as he stands atop them all with a 74.4% season.

The funny part is with all that, the accolades and numbers don’t even scratch the surface of what he was for the Saints, he was hope for a franchise every year that they would be at minimum fun to watch, at best a high-level contender. He was a Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award recipient, and one of the players who gave his all to give back to New Orleans. And he was hope for quarterbacks without the model stature, who wanted to prove they belonged and had what it took to make the league.

August 31st, 2024 = 8 Days Until Opening Day For The 2024 Saints Season

Countdown to Kickoff: Currently no Saints player is wearing the Number 8 (and nobody will ever wear #8 for the Saints again)

1725194997883.png

Only one player has ever had the privilege of wearing this number for the New Orleans Saints, and that player is Archie Manning.

The father of Eli and Peyton, Manning attended Ole Miss where he was a two-time first-team All-SEC player as well as a third-team All-American in 1969. In the 1971 NFL Draft, Manning was selected no. 2 overall by the Saints. During his time in New Orleans, Manning was for the most part a highly talented player on a not so talented team which led to some hard times in the Bayou. However, even with little success as a team Manning was able to carve out a 12-year career with the Saints passing for nearly 22,000 yards and 115 passing touchdowns. Manning was also named to two consecutive Pro Bowls in 1978 and 1979. Today, Manning is now honored and recognized to the highest degree as a he was elected into the teams Ring of Honor as well as the teams Hall of Fame. And for all the reasons above, it is likely that no other Saint will wear his No. 8 again.

Elisha Archibald Manning, III was born on May 19th, 1949. Born in Drew, Mississippi, Manning was the son of Jane Elizabeth (née Nelson) and Elisha Archibald Manning Jr. He grew up heavily involved in football, basketball, baseball, and track. His father, known as "Buddy", was interested in Archie's sports activities, but the nature of his job left him little if any time for attending games. Instead, Archie III drew his inspiration from a local high school sports star, James Hobson. His mother was "a ubiquitous presence at all of his games, no matter what the sport or level." Manning attended Drew High School. Manning was selected in the Major League Baseball draft 4 times, first in 1967 by the Braves, twice by the White Sox, and finally by the Royals in 1971.

In the summer of 1969, his father, Buddy Manning, committed suicide. Archie, who was home from college for summer vacation, was the first to discover Buddy's body. In the biopic-documentary Book of Manning, Manning said that he considered dropping out and getting a job to support his mother and sister, but his mother persuaded him to return to college and not put his rising football career to waste.

Manning attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford and was the starting quarterback at Ole Miss for three years. In the first national prime time broadcast of a College Football Game (on ABC, October 4, 1969), Manning threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns, also rushing for 104 yards, in a 33–32 loss to Alabama.

Manning was the second overall pick in the 1971 NFL draft and played for the News Orleans Saints for ten full seasons. In 1972, he led the league in pass attempts and completions and led the National Football Conference in passing yards, though the team's record was only 2–11–1.

Manning sat out the entire 1976 season after corrective surgery on his right shoulder, spending the second half of that season in the team's radio booth after Dick Butkus abruptly quit his position as color commentator. In 1978, he was named the NFC Player of the Year by UPI after leading the Saints to a 7–9 record. That same year, Archie was also named All-NFC by both the UPI and The Sporting News. Manning was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1978 and 1979.

He retired having never played on a team that notched a winning record or made the playoffs. Indeed, he is one of the few players to have played 10 or more years in the NFL without taking part in an official playoff game. His record as a starter was 35–101–3 (26.3%), the worst in NFL history among QBs with at least 100 starts.

The Saints have not reissued Manning's No. 8 since he left the team midway through the 1982 season.

While it has not been formally retired, it has long been understood that no Saint will ever wear it again.

September 1st, 2024 - Taysom Hill - Number 7

The Saints Open The 2024 Season One Week From Today!

Countdown to Kickoff: Taysom Hill is the Saints Player of Day 7

1725199014442.png

We are down to only seven days remaining until the New Orleans Saints open their 2024 regular season against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, which makes today’s player of the day Taysom Hill, the current wearer of the No. 7. Hill has been a staple of the Saints’ offense for the past few years, and with the new offensive scheme coming with Klint Kubiak, he may see more touches than ever before.

To start off, here is some background on Hill before we get into what we can expect from him in 2024.

  • Name (Age): Taysom Hill (34)
  • Position/s: Running back, Tight end, Fullback, Quarterback, special teams gunner/punt protector
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-2, 220 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.60
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $9,196,500
  • College: BYU
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2017 (Green Bay Packers)
  • NFL experience: 8th season
Hill has been an extremely critical component to the Saints, playing in 97 games for them across seven seasons, starting 41, and accruing 2,159 rushing yards, 27 rushing touchdowns, 76 receptions for 756 yards and 11 touchdowns, and 191 passing completions for 2,348 yards and 8 touchdowns. On top of all of that, he has had 1,148 snaps on special teams in that span of time. The part that makes this even more interesting is his usage has been somewhat minimized by Pete Carmichael in recent years.

However, now the Saints have Kubiak at OC, and he has been utilizing Hill at Fullback throughout training camp on top of his prior obligations. Hill may be in for some fun new play-calls heading his way. With little to no competition for his snaps due to his unique positional value, he'll likely be in for another year of quality production.

Hill has achieved some unique accomplishments over his career while only getting part-time snaps at various positions for the Saints over the past 7 years.

In 2023 the NFL Hall of Fame created a display that included game worn equipment of Taysom Hill after Bears game on November 5th, 2023.

Hill joined Frank Gifford as being the Only 2 players in NFL History to have scored at least 25 Rushing Touchdowns, at least 10 Receptions for Touchdowns, and at least 10 Passing Touchdowns Thrown. Gifford is a member of the HOF and was also named to the HOF All-1950s Team. He last played in the NFL in 1964, 60 years ago.

Hill is poised to add his name to another NFL Record in 2024. He currently has 756 Career Receiving Yards. He needs 244 more receiving yards to reach 1,000 for his career. With that, Hill would then join Charlie Trippi as the only two players in NFL History to have at least 1,000 yards in Rushing, Receiving, and Passing. Trippi is a member of the HOF and was also named to the HOF All-1940s Team. He last played in the NFL in 1955, 69 years ago.

Hill holds the NFL Record for a Quarterback for having the Most Touchdowns (7) in a season (2019) without a single turnover.

Hill is the only player in NFL History to have a 5.0 Yards Per Carry Rushing Average or higher more than once at the age of 30 and after. He has done so the past 4 years in a row at the age of 30, 31, 32, and 33.

Hill also holds and shares numerous Saints records. He and Alvin Kamara are the only 2 players in Saints Franchise History that have recorded at least 25 Rushing Touchdowns and at least 10 Receiving Touchdowns.

September 2nd, 2024 - Willie Gay - Number 6

Countdown to Kickoff: Willie Gay Jr. is the Saints Player of Day 6

1725314915789.png

We have only six days remaining until the New Orleans Saints Week 1 kickoff against the Carolina Panthers, making today’s player of the day Willie Gay Jr, the current wearer of the No. 6 jersey. With the linebacker core shifting for 2024, the new addition for New Orleans has a chance to take snaps away from Pete Werner, among others.

Let’s take a look at the background of Gay Jr. before looking into what we can expect from him in the 2024 season.

  • Name (Age): Willie Gay Jr. (26)
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-1, 243 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.70
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $3,000,000
  • College: Mississippi State
  • Drafted: Round 2 Pick 63 (Kansas City Chiefs)
  • NFL experience: 5th season
The Saints have made a solid few additions this offseason in hopes of solidifying their team both with starters and depth, Willie Gay Jr. is somewhere in the middle. Initially, he was viewed as a starting candidate who would receive significant snaps after a somewhat down season for Pete Werner and a tough start to camp.

However, an improvement later in camp and an extension have vaulted Werner back into starting contention, which makes the linebacking unit extremely intriguing as the Saints typically only run two linebackers on the field at one time. Presumably, we can expect both Werner and Gay Jr. to get playing time in different scenarios, which is why both are viewed so highly alongside Demario Davis.

September 3rd, 2024 - Will Harris - Number 5

Countdown to Kickoff: Will Harris is the Saints Player of Day 5

We have only five days remaining until the New Orleans Saints Week 1 kickoff against the Carolina Panthers, making today’s player of the day Will Harris, the current wearer of the No. 5 jersey.

Let’s take a look at the background of Will Harris before looking into what we can expect from him in the 2024 season.

1725391634658.png

  • Name (Age): Will Harris (28)
  • Position: Safety
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-1, 206 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 9.63
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $1,152,500
  • College: Boston College
  • Drafted: Round 3 Pick 81, 2018 (Detroit Lions)
  • NFL experience: 6th season
Harris joined the Saints after having spent five seasons with the Detroit Lions playing in 81 regular season games (40 starts) and registering 230 tackles (164 solo), 1.5 sacks, two interceptions, 14 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 16 special teams stops.

Harris' lone interception of the 2023 season came against the Saints' NFC South rival, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Harris hauled in a Baker Mayfield pass after it had been deflected at the line of scrimmage.

Harris brings versatility to the Saints having played at safety, nickel and outside corner at the NFL level.

Drafted by the Lions in the third round (81st overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Boston College. In 50 career games (41 starts) for the Eagles, he tallied 225 total tackles, 12 pass defenses, 7.5 stops for loss, six fumble recoveries, five interceptions and one sack, earning third team All-ACC honors in his senior year.

His father, Will Harris, Sr., played college football for Mississippi State and was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round (195th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft.

September 4th, 2024 - Derek Carr - Number 4

Countdown to Kickoff: Derek Carr is the Saints Player of Day 4

We have only four days remaining until the New Orleans Saints Week 1 kickoff against the Carolina Panthers, making today’s player of the day Derek Carr, the current wearer of the No. 4 jersey.

Let’s take a look at the background of Derek Carr before looking into what we can expect from him in the 2024 season.

1725546989406.png

  • Name (Age): Derek Carr (33)
  • Position: Quarterback
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-3, 215 pounds
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.56
  • 2024 salary cap hit: $12.688,000
  • College: Fresno State
  • Drafted: 2nd Round, 36 pick overall, 2014 (Raiders)
  • NFL experience: 10 seasons

Carr was born in Bakersfield, California, the youngest of three children to Rodger and Sheryl Carr. He and his family lived in Bakersfield before relocating to Sugar Land, Texas, in 2002 when his oldest brother, David Carr, became the first overall draft pick of the then-expansion Houston Texans. Carr and his family moved back to Bakersfield for his senior year, and he attended Bakersfield Christian High School. After his high school football career finished, Carr was named the National Player of the Year by the National Private Schools Athletic Association in 2009.

Carr enrolled as an early-entry freshman for the spring semester at Fresno State, where his brother David also played quarterback, in 2009 so he could participate in spring football with the Bulldogs.
Carr received the 2013 CFPA Elite QB Award for his performance over three seasons at Fresno State.

While at Fresno State, he wore number 4 as a homage to his favorite NFL player, Brett Favre. Carr's number was retired by Fresno State during halftime of a game against Incarnate Word in 2017. On July 14, 2019, Carr received a mural at his former college, Fresno State University.

Carr was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft with the 36th overall pick. He was the fourth quarterback to be selected that year. On May 16, he was assigned his requested number of 4. On May 21, he was signed to a four-year, $5.37 million contract with a $2.2 million signing bonus.

On August 28, Carr impressed the coaches and fans in the Raiders' fourth and final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, after coming into the game as the backup to Matt Schaub and taking the Raiders down the field for three touchdowns in the first quarter, then throwing another touchdown on their next possession of the second quarter, before being relieved. For his short playing time in the game, he went 11-of-13 for 143 yards and three touchdowns for a nearly perfect quarterback rating.

(Imagine the excitement by the Saints Fan Base if a Rookie QB played a near perfect quarter of football in the preseason.) :)

On September 1, Raiders head coach Dennis Allen announced that Carr would start over Schaub in the team's opener against the New York Jets and mentioned that the decision was not week-to-week; Carr would be the Raiders starting quarterback moving forward. Carr therefore became the first rookie quarterback in Raiders history to start a season opener and was also the only rookie quarterback from the 2014 draft class to start in Week 1.

On January 31, 2023, it was announced that he would be replacing Joe Burrow of the Bengals for the 2023 Pro Bowl.

The Raiders released Carr on February 14, following his decision to decline waiving a no-trade clause in his contract.

On March 6, 2023, Carr signed with the Saints on a four-year contract worth $150 million, reuniting him with former 2014 Raiders head coach Dennis Allen. After a slow start to the season with the Saints sitting at 5–7, Carr helped lead them down the stretch to a 4–1 record to close out the season where he passed for 14 touchdowns in five games, including a four-touchdown game in Week 18 against the Falcons. Carr had six games on the season going over 300 passing yards. In the 2023 season, Carr started in all 17 games and finished with 3,878 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The Saints went 9–8 in 2023, a winning season but one without a playoff appearance.

On November 30, 2021, Haener entered the NCAA transfer portal. On December 8, Haener withdrew from the transfer portal and returned to Fresno State.

During his college career Haener appeared in 32 games, starting 29 of them with a 21-8 record as a starter. He completed 740 passes on 1,085 attempts, a 68.2 completion percentage for 9,120 yards with 68 touchdowns and 18 interceptions with a passer rating of 156.2.

Haener made the initial opening day roster for the Saints to start the 2023 season. However, in early September, it was revealed he failed a drug test earlier that summer, testing positive for a banned performance enhancing substance. Haener was suspended the first six weeks of the season.

He released a statement: "I still do not know how the substance got into my body, as none of my supplements or prescribed medications contain the banned ingredient", nonetheless subsequently stating "I must take full responsibility for the failed test"

His mother Julie Haener was a long-time anchor at KTVU-TV in Oakland from 1997-2024 and was an anchor in Fresno in the early 1990s.

On July 26, 2024, Haener announced that he had been diagnosed with skin cancer. He underwent surgery in early August to have it removed and had 32 stitches put in the right cheek of his face. He only missed one practice and then on the following Saturday, August 10th, 2024, he played sparingly in a preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals where he completed 13 passes for 107 yards, a long completion of 58 yards.

Haener is entering his 2nd year in the NFL. For the 2nd straight year, he has made the Saints 53-man roster. He hasn't yet thrown a pass in a regular season NFL game. He is in a tight battle for the #2 QB job with rookie Spencer Rattler. Coach Dennis Allen hasn't yet named which player will be the #2 QB to start the year.
