COVID-19 Outbreak Information Updates (Reboot) [over 150.000,000 US cases (est.), 6,422,520 US hospitilizations, 1,148,691 US deaths.] (1 Viewer)

Forty-seven people have been charged in what US authorities say is the largest case yet of pandemic fraud, accusing the defendants of a “brazen” scheme to swindle millions from a program intended for low-income children and using it to “enrich themselves”.

Those charged in the scheme are accused of creating companies that claimed to be offering food to tens of thousands of children across Minnesota, then sought reimbursement for those meals through the US Department of Agriculture’s food nutrition programs.

Prosecutors say few meals were actually served, and the defendants used the money to buy luxury cars, property and jewelry. Authorities say $250m was ultimately stolen from the federal program.

“This $250 million is the floor,” Andy Luger, the US attorney for Minnesota, said at a news conference.

Federal officials repeatedly described the alleged fraud as “brazen,” and decried that it involved a program intended to feed children who needed help during the pandemic. Michael Paul, special agent in charge of the Minneapolis FBI office, called it “an astonishing display of deceit”.

Luger said the government was billed for more than 125m fake meals, with some defendants making up names for children by using an online random name generator.

He displayed one form for reimbursement that claimed a site served exactly 2,500 meals each day Monday through Friday – with no children ever getting sick or otherwise missing from the program.

“These children were simply invented,” Luger said…….

Let me know when people start going to jail for this. I won't hold my breath though.

A federal watchdog on Thursday found that fraudsters may have stolen $45.6 billion from the nation’s unemployment insurance program during the pandemic, using the Social Security numbers of dead people and other tactics to deceive and bilk the U.S. government.

The new estimate is a dramatic increase from the roughly $16 billion in potential fraud identified a year ago, and it illustrates the immense task still ahead of Washington as it seeks to pinpoint the losses, recover the funds and hold criminals accountable for stealing from a vast array of federal relief programs.

The report, issued by the inspector general for the Labor Department, paints a grim portrait of the country’s jobless aid program beginning under the Trump administration in 2020.

The weekly benefits helped more than 57 million families just in the first five months of the crisis — yet the program quickly emerged as a tempting target for criminals.

To siphon away funds, scammers allegedly filed billions of dollars in unemployment claims in multiple states simultaneously and relied on suspicious, hard-to-trace emails.

In some cases, they used more than 205,000 Social Security numbers that belonged to dead people. Other suspected criminals obtained benefits using the identities of prisoners who were ineligible for aid……..

I've been feeling slightly crappy lately. Chalked it up to strep. Just took a home test and tested positive for COVID.

Main symptoms several days in have been coughing, sore throat, some fatigue that comes later in the day. It hasn't really hindered me from my daily activity, still working and such. Started out with what felt like a sinus infection. I suppose that it is moving its way down the respiratory tract which is why I have the periodic coughing fits and soreness in throat.

My wife has been telling me that I have a case of the "man flu". I told her after the test, it's actually BROVID. :)

I actually find that when the government charges someone with fraud, they win.

Just got flu and Moderna Omicron booster. I had 3 Pfizer shots prior. Nice knowing y’all.
I'll get both as well, but not at the same time. I'll get the flu shot first and wait a week for my 4th covid shot. The
as booster I had for covid made me left arm useless the following day. I was fine the day after.

Omnicron still kills. It kills older adults more frequently and I'm one of them. CDC recommends those over 50
get the 4th shot.

I’m 53 and work in a healthcare setting. It only makes sense for me. Got one in each arm. Flu side is slightly sore, but the omicron booster side hurts enough to take an ibuprofen.

I got the Pfizer booster last night (also had Pfizer for the initial round and previous booster). Arm is sore, and I’m a little lethargic (but it’s also Saturday afternoon and I had to get up early and I’ve had a busy day), but that’s about it.
