D Smith thinks bounty investigators let Goodell down (1 Viewer)

Sounds like he's giving Goodell a great face-saving opportunity right there. Good play by D. Smith (hopefully)

Exactly what I took from the article.

Now that you got caught up a creek admit that the case isn't what you thought and we'll help you railroad the people that helped with the investigation so you don't take the fall.

Very good move by DeMaurice Smith. This way, if the NFL says something negative about his comments, they look unreasonable. Of course, they have been completely unreasonable, so maybe they'll want to be consistent. :Eyecrazy:

and it might not be thaaaat far from the truth.

the nfl just flat out didnt seem to have the needed internal checks and balances to be weilding so much power (to even put someone associated with star caps on this for instance).

I hope Goodell doesn't feel De Smith's is patronizing him now. I think Goodell is too prideful in admitting there were mistakes made in the investigation. We all know there were plenty, but his admission of those mistakes, whether he made them or his investigators made them, ends up falling on him. Just like when he handed Payton his punishment he said something along the lines of, "If you didn't know what was going on, then you should have." Well, he is getting a little taste of his own medicine but he still needs a few more spoonfulls.

Remember, this is the guy that a little over a year ago during the CBA negations, refused to allow player discipline to be managed by anyone other than him. He was quoted saying: “The answer to that is no, I’m not going to be open to that,” Goodell said at the time. “I’m not going to hand off the brand and the reputation of the NFL to somebody who is not associated with the NFL. I promise you that. That is one of the number one jobs as a commissioner in my opinion.”

This guy is hard headed. Regardless of what happens, If he makes it to next year's draft, I wonder what his excuse will be when he is booed off the stage.

“Virtually everyone is wondering whether this process has been fair and whether we’ve achieved our goal of finding the truth,” Smith said. “We shouldn’t be in a world where players are being punished for something that is inconclusive and unclear.”

Smith said he doesn’t believe that NFL players set out to injure opposing players.

“It’s inconsistent with what our players stand for,” Smith said. “It’s inconsistent with everything we’ve done to make this game safer.”

And Smith believes the findings of the NFL’s investigation are inconsistent with a fair and complete investigation.

I believe that it is the truth. Many signs point to a sloppy and superficial investigation. Goodell's fault was that he relied on it.

I agree with everyone that thinks this is a well played opportunity for NFLPA to give Godell an out, but don't forget Vilma still has a lawsuit against Godell. If Godell would take this out and say yes I was mislead by my investigators, I had no idea the evidence was this shotty, would that not make it a slam dunk case for Vilma? Vilma might have to offer to drop the case if he overturns the appeal, that would sweeten the pot for Godell. If not Godell isn't going to risk losing twice.

The investigators (and Goodell, IMO) decided on what they wanted the outcome to be and sought "evidence" to prove it. This is unbelievably obvious from the evidence they have presented thus far, not to mention re-writing GWs "confession" for him to coincide with what they want the "evidence" to prove. The scary part is that it's always the "hardest" evidence that ends up appearing so questionable.

Unless Vilma could show a reckless disregard for the truth of the allegations by Godell in relying on the investigation's findings, then no; it wouldn't be a slam dunk case.

Come on Goodell, give it up, you've either been misled by people in your own organization or you've misled the public yourself.

Might as well admit it and start over.
