Derek Carr named NFLPA Community MVP (7 Viewers)

I didn't like how they made a show of it. according to Jesus we should "not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing"
Yeah, I mean i do think he's a bit of a bible thumper, and I recall kind of looking at him sideways when he purchased the WR's gold chains last year as a way to make friends BUT....he also could not have donated the money too, regardless of him being recognized for it.

Congrats to Carr! Those things mean a lot to the community and for anyone (especially those with the means to do it) to take the time to actually do it, is special in itself. It's always good to hear about players that give back it's even better when the players on your favorite team pull through and also get honored in doing a selfless thing.

Carr's one of the good guys in life. Carrying on the tradition of Brees of giving back to the community and caring in general. I just wish from an X-and-O standpoint that things around him were in better shape.

An addendum here if anyone notices what I'm typing .... the NFL's PR machine is the reason why charitable donations from players get publicized. Even back when the NFL was more watchable than it is now, you still had players on each team featured in United Way commercials posing with special-needs children and such. IIRC, Archie Manning and Derland Moore did a few Saints-themed ads for it. And Tom Benson himself did, too. Anyone else over 45 remember the line they'd always say? "The United Way -- it brings out the best in all of us."

If players had their way most of the time, no one would ever know about donations. The ones who are genuine would do it and not tell a soul about it.
As a United Way kid, I’m ever grateful that the team did community events with us. We didn’t care how good the players were on the field, we appreciated that they came to spend some time around. Any parent who fashioned themselves an armchair general manager kept their thoughts about the team’s on-field performance to themselves lest they and their children become personae non grata, and why subject your kids to that possibility. The players and coaches show up to these events to be helpful, not to have their jobs criticized.

Why are people sheetting on Carr here? I mean pick your battles for forks sake.

Congrats to Carr for being a good human being. Thank you, Derek.

It's ridiculously petty and very Scrooge-like. Well bah humbug on the naysayers. Seriously, don't they have anything better to do?

You’re taking a lot away from Carr. Next time just huff and say “I don’t like Derek Carr” where nobody else has to hear it and move on to the next thread.
Don’t dislike the dude just said it’s really a drop in the bucket for him and I doubt if the cameras weren’t around he’d be “so” helpful.

Look, not taking anything away from Carr but him giving 45k is like the average person giving 800 bucks. It helps, but it’s not Mother Theresa type work.
$45K is $45K.

That is money he could have used on himself or his family that he chose to give away...

That's awesome, actually. You were able to see the players humanize themselves in a way few could. And it just seems to have been more genuine an act before the internet and social media. Fewer avenues of communication meant each of those events really had to mean something.
