Last year had it's share of injuries that put out great players. One of them was rookie QB Deshaun Watson.

You know him as the kid who beat Bama back in the BCS title game. Watson started the year for Houston after coming in and had thrown 19 touchdowns in his limited 6 game starts. He tore his ACL in practice after the monster game he had against Seattle, putting 38 points on the board in a game that Houston almost won.

ACL injuries are tough to come back on, so I'm curious if he will recover from this.

It's sad to see, because he was one of the most fascinating rookies to watch at the beginning of last year and was on pace for a big number of TDs. Watson was 3-3 as a starter and Houston finished the year 4-12 after his injury. Their offense which looked very promising that included a 57-14 beatdown on Tennessee, ended up collapsing into one of the worst units in the league after Watson's injury.

I'm getting used to seeing the running Qbs break out their first years and struggle once the teams have tape on them their second years. Seems one or two every year. So yea I expect him to just be a below average starter this year.

Where my thinking is at. They installed similiar play and formation concepts he was comfortable with at clemson. He is gonna eventually have to learn to read and proccess at a Nfl level. The RPO one pass read and go wont be something u can sustain in this league espically with film. Im very curiois how he does. He has accuracy and ball placement issues. Some mechanic stuff but he has a strong mental make up and great poise. Im curious what kind of player he turns out to be. Guess well see

I'm not quite getting the doom and gloom of the OP.

And why aren't we asking the same about Wentz? He stands a smaller chance of full recovery for 2018 as his injury occurred two months later.

This isn't doom and gloom. I'm just curious how he will perform coming off a serious injury.

Wentz IMO was slightly overrated last year. Take away his TD numbers and his efficiency and pass completion was a bit shaky at times. Luckily the Eagles were a stacked team with tons of talent on offense and the receivers caught pretty much anything. I would not be surprised if he struggles next year too and they are smart to keep Foles around. If worst comes to worst, they can lean back on their SB MVP.

I don't trust a great rookie season anyway. We'll see what happens this year. He's got a great WR to throw to at least. But I don't know if Kelemete can be enough of an upgrade for that OL.

Watson is a gunslinger type QB. He's going to win you some games. He's going to lose you some games. That's not going to change. That makes him more popular among media and fans than with his coaches. They have to keep it simpler than they'd like and constantly dial him back.

But plays are still going to break down. He's used to getting out of (some) trouble with his feet. The question becomes, has he lost some of his escapability? That could lead to more forced throws. Has his game progressed between his ears? That could lead to fewer forced throws.

I think defenses will dial up the pressure on him this season and worry less about him beating them with his feet until he makes them pay for it.

The media will call it a sophomore slump.

I’m pulling for Watson for sure. He’s a good player - I think if he’s healthy, he’s going to be successful. Heart of gold on that kid.

It's Houston's OL that made Savage seem terrible IMO. But Watson was mobile enough to make it work before the injury so Kelemente should slightly improve their situation @least

When you move/run so much the chances of injury increase dramatically. Watson would have been rookie of the year if he hadn't been injured. He doesn't move in a way to prevent injury. You will hardly find an NFL quarterback who runs a lot and has a long career.

Why doesn't Brees ever get injured? Well he trains specifically to avoid injury first of all, but also he hardly runs the ball ever. He just plain doesn't spend much time with the ball. And he bends like a mother******. Same with Brady. That and he is a tackle avoidance freak in the pocket and he gets rid of the ball very quickly. He always is close to the league leader in sack avoidance. Yeah, we've had some pretty good offensive lines, but a lot of the goodness is Brees' ability to move in the pocket. The athleticism of Brees is one of the most underrated parts of his ability.

Aaron Rodgers for example, his career will not be nearly as long as Brees/Brady because he relies so much on his scrambling ability.

Had it not been for his injury, he would have easily been the offensive rookie of the year ..... liked what he did but he will face adversity this season ....

Do you realize that Watson is considered a pocket passer that can run? He’s more of a Steve Young type than Michael Vick.
