I keep seeing references to Payton running his mouth about how much he liked Mahomes, which could have led to KC jumping ahead of the Saints in the draft. We can speculate all we want to about whether or not the Saints’ coaching staff can or cannot develop quarterbacks—but I’m not sure it’s arguable that the Saints would have been better off drafting him, despite the stellar quality of the 2017 draft and Lattimore’s excellent play.
What’s desperately needed is an excellent drafted quarterback in the next two years. Carr will do for the short term. Let’s make sure we have the players to support Carr until that “excellent drafted quarterback” becomes available.
