Goodwin is the starting center for the 49ers now. Do we get compensatory pick for him? Anybody know how the whole comp pick think works?

Goodwin was an unrestricted free agent if I'm not mistaken...only restricted free agents who sign offer sheets with other teams that are not matched by the current team results in a compensatory pick.

I'm not sure how it works but since we did sign Kruetz that might have something to do with it even tho he retired.

Plus we signed Franklin away from the 49'ers so maybe it will be looked at as a trade of players.

Don't really know to be honest.

But Fujita was a UFA also and we wound up receiving a 7th for him.

Ah, you know I didnt think of that. I think its when you dont replace the player with another player with similar salary, or something like that. That Damn Kruetz.

I doubt it. Even though we 'lost' Ayodele, Young, and Goodwin. We signed our own plethora of FA's. Franklin, Kreutz, Sproles, even Herring. We'd be lucky to get a 7th.

That's a different thing you're thinking of. RFA's get tendered with a pick and if someone signs thems to a different contract then they give us that particular pick.

The op is asking about compensatory picks. These are handed out by the league at the end of the season based on teams losing top free agents. For Goodwin I would expect a 7th rounder. A 6th would be great though. Only players like Nnamdi (who left oakland as a UFA) will get the highest pick in the 3rd.

not likely. we signed a lot of free agents this offseason.....more than i thought we would

and really only lost a few like ayodele and goodwin

maybe the 7th rounder being spoken of for Fujita was because of the CBA rules in 2010

Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.
The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.

I found this in a thread around draft time:
Compensatory picks
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections").
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

FA Gains: Rogers, Franklin, McBride, Herring, Hall, Kreutz, Sproles

FA Losses: Ayodele, Giordano, Goodwin, Hargrove, Wilkerson, Young

Bush was a trade, Shockey was cut.

No way we get any picks.

I agree.

Rogers: 1y/4m
Franklin: 1y/4m
McB: Undisclosed
Herring: 3y/5m
Hall: 2y/2m
Sproles: 4y/14m
Kreutz: 1y/2m

Ayodele: 4y/9m (4th DT)
Giordano: Undisclosed (Cut and resigned, Backup)
Goody: 3y/10.9m (Starter)
Hargrove: Undisclosed (4th DT)
Wilkerson: 1y/1.5m (IR)
Young: 3y/6m (3rd safety)

Just looking at the dollars, we gained more than we lost. Playtime factors in as well, and we only lost one starter.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Chargers got something nice for Spoles though.
