Does anyone still think mid-tier QBs are worth it? (1 Viewer)

You can win with an average/below average QB like Carr but it takes a really deep and reliable team surrounding him. We do not have the cap space/assets or front office to make it work.

For us, its pointless. Even when Tampa went and got Brady they were able to stack the team with more talent. We can't do that and will not be able to do that as long as we have Carr and keep borrowing from the future so its pointless to have him.

Some portion of your team had be be extremely strong and a force. Ravens with defense. The broncos with Davis and the run game. Whatever. Some part of the team has to be able to win a game. If you have a mid quarterback, you either need a powerful defense or a running game that can wear out a defense. Carr can do what it takes. But we have no running game that forces an issue, nor do we have a defense that has gap control, discipline or knows how to tackle.

All these things have a common factor, and we all know what it is

So what do you do when you are not one of the few teams without an elite qb. Just play a minimum salary qb and let it burn? 28 teams in the league tanking for an elite qb. Carr has his place, we saw what it could be when things were right. He's not going to save a disaster of a season, but if we had some good luck, he's good enough to ride that wave. Worth the money imo.

In this era, no

Unless you have one of those guys, the rest of your team has to be stacked (like the Niners). The goal should be to have one of those guys who could realistically win it all.

The answer is, it depends on how long you're willing to suck because elite QBs don't come around very often. There's not one in every draft, or even every other draft. You can win with a good but not great QB and lose in the playoffs. But, if it's elite QB or bust, you're going to suck for a long long time. Pick your poison.

Carr still hasn't been surrounded by a good organization and team. This team has been thin in talent since Drew retired. It's been patchwork, with a few nice pieces sprinkled in.

But even great QBs don’t guarantee a Super Bowl. Marino won a lot of games. Moon lots of games. Fouts, Archie, Vick Cunningham, Ryan. None won a Super Bowl. Where as Trent Dilfer did. Russell Wilson did.

It’s luck. Coaching catching the right point, right time. Defense no one has adjusted to. An offense no one has really figured out. Or having a crazy level of talent. Or simply a position that allows everyone else to be so much better. The cowboys line under Jimmy Johnson. The Hogs under Gibbs. Very very hard to beat an offense with a top level line

There are only ten top 10 QBs and most teams are looking for a top 5 guy even if they have number 10 on the list. I think having a mid tier QB can work but you have to really know their strengths and weaknesses and work around those explicitly. I'm not sure Kubiak has the experience to do that yet with any of our QBs, but he's learning on the job a bit. DA and Loomis needed to make sure that he was catered to to have success.

Carr is a bad QB when under pressure and he has no mobility, like bottom 3 in scrambles. Have the Saints explicitly built the rest of the offense around that fact? I don't think they have. I think they added guys like Chase Young and drafted Kool-Aid despite the fact that they didn't have the right pieces to make the offense function properly. I think many of us would have traded our top 5 defense for a top 10 if it meant we'd also have a top 15 offense. They could have done more, but they chose to go a different route and we're seeing the results.
I see it differently. I think they have tried to build around Carr to the extent possible and we saw how that looked in the first 2 games. The problem is the team had no answers when key starters started dropping like flies. Lack of depth has killed the team. I have no doubt Carr continues playing well if McCoy and others on the OL don't go down.
