I was watching the Alabama Governor's debate tonight and I was wondering how crucial Bob Riley has been to the state of alabama these past 4 years, well why not suppose Jindal could be the same way for the state of La. or even a Democrat who is good at being fiscally conservative or even be halfway decent as Riley has been for this state? I think Riley has been a good governor for Alabama because he has good people working for him that know what their doing and have good sense of the people's intentions and ideas.

If Their was a Bob Riley like Governor in La. would it be good for this state overall?

I know Riley isnt perfect and has made mistakes in Alabama affairs but if held accountable he has done a good job, does La. need that too?

I liked Riley when I spent time in Alabama, but I think the entire country could use more good government types. Governor Blanco is a lightning rod now because she gets her share of the blame (much of it unfair). She's done a very good job outside of her Hurricane Katrina response (which will be her undoing) compared to past Republican and Democratic governors. And she's embarking on a 3 week trade mission to China, Taiwan and a couple of other east Asian countries to drum up some business and trade. She had previously done that in Cuba and parts of the Caribbean and got some bucks for the trade and port sectors.

Look, I didn't vote for the woman, but the hatred on her (especially for those who bow to President Bush) is pretty much unfair. MLU and I had been following her actions up to Katrina and had listed several reform issues that she'd gotten through (juvenile justice which was worst in the nation) and a couple of manufacturing coups she got for the state when her predecessor Mike Foster didn't even have an office of economic development (couldn't compete for those auto plants that came to MS, AL, and TN because he wasn't even in the game - and he served 8 years). To listen to the die-hard Republicans, you'd think he actually did something when in reality he did nothing.

Back to Governor Riley - he's a nice mix of middle-of-the-road no-nonsense values. Almost all the reasonable people I hung with in Mobile planned to vote for him, but apparently many in the woods would have preferred a guy like Judge Moore.

Bottom line? We have a governor (who will be a 1-term governor only) who has already done more than Governors Foster (2 terms) and Edwards (last term) who will never get any real credit because of her performance during Hurricane Katrina. That's on her.

TPS, when are you coming to Mobile agian, man? Its a shame I didnt get to hang with you last year when you were down here after Katrina, it would been nice ot meet with you somewhere here in Mobile. If you are coming down my way again, let me know, okay?

And if you can go to Dreamlands BBQ while you are here, I think you know where that is, dont you?

Yeah, we'll definitely hook up next time I'm over there and vice versa - my treat of course. Yeah, I hit Dreamland, Saucy-Q and Brick Pit. They're all pretty close, but I found Brick Pit has the best pulled pork (if you go in there, you can see a brick I colored in on the ceiling near the men's bathroom - Katrina 1, TPS 0 (or something like that). Saucy-Q's (at least the one between the I-65 Corridor and Midtown) had my favorite ribs. Various Mobileans have their preferences, but I enjoyed all of them. I only went to JR's the first night I was in town, but it was pretty good too. But since it is a chain restaurant, I didn't want to spend too much there.

Some of the other cool places I ate at was that burger joint in the hood of Midtown (can't remember the name), the Jamaican place and Do Drop Inn.

The thing with Brick Pit was that the owner took time to discuss with me some of his accolades. They apparently won the NCAA bbq cookoff (think representing the Crimson Tide) in 2004. If you haven't been there, the pulled pork is as good as anyone's.

If you had asked me 3 years ago if I would vote for Gov Riley I would have laughed till I cried. But he's recovered quite nicely from his tax increase debacle. The state is in much better shape than when he took office and is consistently improving. That doesn't mean the mudraking isn't in full force with a somewhat lame attempt to link Riley to Abramoff and the LA Indian casino controversy.
