Dolphins sign Saints FA LB Willie Gay Jr. to 1-year deal (44 Viewers)

I'm fine w/ that. We had him for a year, got a head start to see if he was someone who could take over for Davis in a couple years, probably were willing to move on after reviewing the tape.

What sucks is that with the previous staff, we very well may have a very bad eval on him and his role, a la Baun.

I don't agree, I think people want to blame the staff for Baun to much when he sat down in an exclusive interview w/ Underhill @ the SB and admitted that he struggled here w/ picking things up. They had the right idea for him to be an off-ball LB but one of the spots was manned by Davis and the other by Pete who had more experience as an offball LB and clearly won favor.

Otherwise they evaluated him just fine. What I can say is that, when 3G was here, he would sometimes create packages so guys who stood out could play. Arguably DA had his guys and he played them and if you were a backup, you were ST's only. They perhaps could have made some packages for him.

He didn’t contribute much, TBH. But he didn’t play much either. In my view, that was due to decisions made by coaches. If his playing time was going to be limited, why was he signed in the first place? It’s very strange.
It was a bit of a strange signing. He was billed as the guy that was a hedge against Werner. But Pete got his new deal before the season even started. I'm not one that typically blames/attributes signings to DA, but this one seemed to be an attempt at motivation. Good luck to Willie Gay!

I think Werner was a Allen guy. He...smh...i hated that extension....and yet I also have to admit he's our most sound smothering tackler. He wasn't a cure but when he came back the tackling improved, but he's not very dynamic at that Will position.

When Davis 1st got here, he played Will his 1st year while Manti Teo played Mike and Klein played Sam. Then Klein slid over to Mike and Davis stayed at Will in Nickel. Davis made far more plays from the Will than Werner makes in the same position. It was the playmaking position int hat scheme and Pete was underwhelming. I guess there's value in being steady and consistent. So i give him props for that.

Yep. The right kind of signing but it just didn't work out. He was the right kind of guy to sign as a guy with lots of speed and talent that could have been ready for a break out. But, he didn't break out so no problem with moving on and looking for the next guy.

I think he was brought in because they could use his speed to chase down running QBs. In fact, he was used that way in several games. Problem is that when he got a shot at playing when Werner went down he just didn't do much.

Yup, He played a good bit of QB Spy for us.

Werner is solid I guess, but it would be nice if they could upgrade there. Can't have everything.

Wasn't the player the coaches thought they were getting.
