Doug Nussmeier is Offensive Coordinator , Saints officially finalized hire per Underhill (6 Viewers)

The biggest advantage for us hiring Staley, is that he’s less likely to be poached. Whereas if Parker improves our D to top 5 ranking, he’ll be gone immediately

I don't know about biggest advantage, but it is an advantage. The other side is that if a guy is so good as a DC that teams want him as their HC, then you have a really great DC and usually it takes a DC several years of being great before teams offer then HC jobs. It's different with OCs, one great year will get you a HC job. Though, to be fair, one great year got Staley a HC job. And if he has a few great years here, he might get another shot to be a HC just like DA did.

I think the DA and Staley type hires have happened enough times to make teams wary of short term successful DCs. If Parker is the best choice, I want them to make that choice.

I'd be really curious to know why media leaks on the defensive side have been dead quiet compared to the offensive side. The team itself hasn't let out a single peep about anyone on the staff other than Moore. My guess is agents are leaking to the media and I wonder what Loomis thinks about that considering they've are historically tight lipped.

Win for him. He'll get to watch his son play as well. Who knows, maybe we draft him next year!

Surely the goal of the DC hire is to get someone who will give us the best chance at a top ranking defense. I hope, at least, that Moore doesn’t choose the person he thinks is second best just because he’ll have him longer.

Are you saying that because Staley was so terrible at being a HC that no one would give him a chance even if he did field a top 5 D? Whereas with Parker if HE got us a top 5 D they would pull the trigger because he’s never been a failed HC? There’s plenty of instances of successful coordinators not getting HC jobs after 1 year, just as there’s plenty of instances of failed HC’s getting another opportunity.

I just don’t think you prioritize the likelihood of having them in a year or two over how good you think that coach can be.

If Moore chooses Staley; I really hope it’s because he thinks the biggest advantage of hiring him is because he is the best DC for the job.
DA will never get another HC job. So it doesnt look good for a failed DC to HC to get many chances. I think for Staley to get another chance, then he;d have to have a top 5 d for at least a few years

I'm sure most of it is agent leaks. I think the difference between Nuss and Staley is that Nuss has been with Moore for years so people knew he was almost certainly going to be his OC. Whereas Moore only worked with Staley for one year so the fit wasn't as obvious.

As far as Staley vs. Parker, I like the idea of the young up and comer, but Staley isn't old by any means and he was in Parker's position only a few years ago.

Anyway, I'm just going to have to trust that Moore knows which one is the best fit since he worked with both of them and he worked with Fangio for a year so hopefully Fangio gave him an idea of which would be the best option to run his defense. And it's Fangio's defense that Moore wants which I'm very happy to hear.

Two is generally the limit in the NFL for the number of times a HC can fail and not get another job. Staley would probably have to have a top 5 defense for 3 to 5 years to get another HC job, but Parker would probably have to have a top 5 defense for 3 to 5 years to get a HC job too. It's really hard for DCs to get HC jobs these days for all the reasons we talked about during our HC search.
