Second contracts are fine for your best picks. Most players hit their 2nd contracts when they are in or are about to reach their physical primes. It's those 3rd and 4th contracts that we should be avoiding and loading up on drafted talent is the way to make those expendable. As much as I love some of our veteran players, it would be nice to have let them go the year before they start their declines instead of having to watch it.Oh man, it's going to take at least 2 or 3 drafts like this to rebuild our base of younger players. It's these kinds of drafts that allow you to cut overpriced veterans and avoid being forced to keep players on their second contract. Avoiding too many huge contracts and reloading with smart draft picks and well researched, lower price free agent contracts is what builds dynasties.
The Eagles formula is the one to emulate. The Patriots used to follow the same formula.
That can only happen if we at the very least use all of our draft picks and right now while we have a pretty big talent deficiency we should be trading back to get more picks. That's why I loved the Lattimore trade last year. We got something for a guy who appeared to be declining because of health. We need to do this more often.
