Draft Prospect Kyle Hamilton, Safety, Norte Dame; Slipping in draft, really? How far will he fall, if any? Trade up for Safety? (2 Viewers)

I have not but he doesn't look like a good paint defender. He's a drag down tackler (uses his length to coral the legs of ball carriers) and his frame doens't lend well to him battling it out as a SS with TE's. He wasn't even used that way in coverage and plays more like a FS/Robber than a SS despite having a larger athletic profile.

In 2016 Karl Joseph went #14
In 2017 Jamal Adams went #6
In 2018 Minkah Fitzpatrick went #18
In 2019 Darnell Savage went #21
In 2020 Xavier McKinney went #35
In 2021 Jevon Holland went #35

None of the top rated safeties in mainstream went on to play like top safeties and while Fitzpatrick had a couple good seasons following a trade to Steelers he's only got 12int's his career.

Recent trend suggest the NFL is finally catching up that you don't have to draft a Safety round one to find a good one. They are all over the draft and it's not really a premium position at that.

I'd be fine w/ Hamilton but not as a trade up prospect, that would disappoint me. There's a reason he's "slipping" and it's not because everything is lining up.
Yeah... After Jenkins and Vaccaro... I'm really not a fan of drafting a safety in the teens. Safety picks really should 2 day pick.

I think he will be an amazing player but I sure hope we don’t trade up for him.

Splitting hairs a little, but you could argue Minkah was rated as the 2nd CB in 2018. Although the Dolphins tried to use him more as a positionless hybrid player and he was traded to the Steelers who moved him to his best position.

Derwin was the first true FS drafted that year in my eyes, and he has the All Pro votes to prove an early FS can still be worth the selection.

I don’t know that I would trade up for any player this year. I think it would be reassuring to see us pick BPA at 18 regardless of position instead of drafting for need. Plus, it will be funny to watch some peoples heads explode if we don’t pick an offensive player in the first.
I agree. Just got my Athletic draft guide and agree with Dane, not a lot of elite at the top this year…at least seems to be the case. Time as always will tell.

My head will explode if we don’t go WR or OT in round one.

I repeat, I would be ok w/ Hamilton...just not via trade up. If he fell to us, run to the podium fast. Personally i like Trevor Penning as a pick at OT in all other scenarios.

You don't trade up for a safety, but if he falls to 18 you consider taking him. Depends on which WRs and OTs are available.
I never ever understood this logic. So if he falls to 10 he’s not worth trading up for, but if I have the 10th pick he’s worth drafting? By that logic if I had the 10th pick and he falls to 10 I should by all means not draft him and trade down. Bogus logic. Any position is worth drafting up for besides a kicker or punter

I dont care what he was timed in his undies. Hamilton’s film is loaded w/instinctive plays as well as a ton of range debunking the low 4 times. That dude is a humongous mam who plays SS, FS, STAR, & LB. That’s literally the type of guy DA seems to covet on D.

God, I hope we don't let him past at 8.

IF, he falls out the top 10. I say try to move up and get him. Jenkins just retired, the big thing we have to replace is his ability to cover these freak TEs we face. Hamilton would be that guy.
I don't think we need to replace TA in this draft, his replacement is already under contract. That only leaves WR as a need.
Good point. I forget how loaded this division is at TE. Panthers being the exception. Saints always seem to have a new solid TE (and Taysom Hill), Bucs have Gronk, and Kyle Pitts is only getting better.

I would not trade up for him. Because of his combine 40 time and because of the talent in this draft, I do not know whether he will be a top 5 pick. But he should be a top 10 pick. I recently heard Greg Cosell talk about how much better of a safety prospect Hamilton is than was Jamal Adams, who was picked at 6. Because of his instincts, vision and intelligence, he plays faster than his 40 time. But given the cost of trading up, his combine 40 time has to be considered.

Were he still on the board at 18, the Saints should not hesitate to pick him. But he will be picked long before 18.

If he is there at 18 then yeah.

Really at safety there are two guys I love before round 3. Hamilton and Daxton Hill.

Of those Hamilton is by far the best. vs run or pass, in the slot or in space, he does it all at a high level. A great safety is transformative for a defense. He has the makings of a great safety.

OK I had to do this. I realize this will not be popular with all of our offensive holes. But hey we need something to talk about right. So Kyle Hamilton, one of the highest rated players in this years draft, who plays Safety (Norte Dame), had a slow 40 time at his pro day yesterday and as you might expect, the sports media needs to make some news. Headlines saying Hamilton is slipping down the draft boards. So I ask you, where will he get picked? Could our defensive minded head coach possibly be campaigning to move up and grab him? Any chance he falls all the way back to 18? If this would happen, then do we have to grab him? So far we’ve lost thee Safety’s from last years team and gained back one via free agency (M. Maye/not counting D. Sorensen). Several top ten picks are now being solicited for trade. Saints have always been aggressive and don’t hesitate to move up. Any Saints news here to talk about or not?

Trade up for a safety?

You actually asked that question?

I really think this dude will end up being the best player from this draft class. Would not mind at all if we traded up for him.

He's a top 5 player in this draft. There are no safer picks at safety than this young man. High floor, high ceiling. He can literally do everything exceptionally well at both safety position. Forget the 40 time. If he's there it's not even a question. He won't be there though, I still think he's going top 10 at worst, likely even still top 5. He's a generational talent at the safety position.
You really like this kid. You have convinced me to go look at more film on him. He is amazing, and 18 is not a bad spot to take a safety. Safety may not be a big enough need for us to get him to get him, and most people think he will be drafted before we pick anyway. But, doesn't look slow on film. I don't know what happened with his 40 time.
