Elon Musk makes $43 Billion offer for private buyout of Twitter (1 Viewer)

So just exploring twitter and trying to figure things out. The Shaun King fella has some interesting stuff going on.

People flipping out should give him a little credit. Dudes the only reason Ukraine has functional internet in some places of the country which is allowing the Ukrainian's to fight off Russian invaders. He didn't need to donate Starlink to Ukraine but he did. He's done more for the world than the out of touch blue checkmark "Journalists" have ever done. I simply take a wait and see approach.

Maybe it's because I follow the right people on Twitter, but I really don't see the huge amount of flipping out that people are talking about. I'm sure some are, but I don't see much mention of this at all on my timeline.

So, to be clear, he had a contract from the State department to provide starlink terminals to Ukraine... it's unclear how much was actually donated and how much was paid for. Not a knock on him, but remember that he's also pretty good at self promotion.

Same here. I think it just depends on where your interests are and how you use Twitter. I'm seeing a little bit, but only where you'd pretty much expect it. But for 90% of the posters I'm really following, it's really a non-topic.

Yeah, there are a few local New Orleans people that comment on local news that I follow that sometimes mention national politics and/or big topics on Twitter that made a comment or two mostly to the effect of I guess Musk was serious and we'll see what happens, but I don't really have anyone on my time line ranting or threatening to delete their account. Though, I'm sure those people do exist.

Of course hate speech, if it’s not against the law, would be allowed if one would really like a popular public-town-square style digital space for free speech, as Musk has indicated. Personally, that’s what I want to see as well.
Thing is, if things like hate speech and abuse are allowed, the result is a town square that's only theoretically public and in practice isn't. Because much of the public are deterred from going there. By the hate speech and abuse.

I think the people seeing it "all over" are looking for it, because that aspect of the buyout is all they really care about.

I was seeing it all over when I signed into twitter. Then I started following people and I don’t see it much at all anymore.

After you spend some time following the accounts that you're interested in and refining your feed, I think most of the general noise goes away (unless you're into that). I'd say 90 to 95 percent of my regular twitter feed is solid, fits what i'm looking for or through various follows over the years, and has little controversy. Sometimes I get that when I get more deeply into some of the replies on things, or if I do search terms to find stuff you'll see it.

But typically, it's pleasant.

Yea that second part is kind of what I was thinking about - anyone who has been there almost seems like they have to be looking for it. I didn't even think about how the new user "experience" would look these days. I think Chuck summed it up nicely though.

I tried Twitter once to see a tweet a friend sent that wouldn't come up on my phone for some reason. Well the account I was sent to had liked or retweeted hardcore porn. Like, not the Cinemax variety, the real stuff. Totally shocked me since Instagram, TikTok and (I think still) Facebook don't even allow nudity.

I still have an account technically but I don't use it. As entertainment or for news, I don't see it as the best way to consume content for me. Obviously works well for a billion people, but it doesn't fit in my lifestyle.

I have honestly never seen any nudity on Twitter, much less porn. I guess I assume they don't allow it because I have never seen it, but I guess maybe I don't follow the wrong/right people?

I have been on twitter since 2009 and don't think I have ever seen porn on there.

I know they're out there, but nothing like that has happened to me. That said, I have gotten friended by those who peddle in that and I just block them. It's rare eneough though.
