Entitled Tourists (1 Viewer)

I can’t imagine this level of social cluelessness

Not quite the same as this but similar

……..Rich cultural heritage brings visitors to Manila, but some feel compelled to leave the safety of the historic center sites to get a glimpse of the city’s inequality. Tour operators in the Philippines—as well as places like Brazil and India—have responded by offering “slum tours” that take outsiders through their most impoverished, marginalized districts.

Slum tourism sparks considerable debate around an uncomfortable moral dilemma. No matter what you call it—slum tours, reality tours, adventure tourism, poverty tourism—many consider the practice little more than slack-jawed privileged people gawking at those less fortunate. Others argue they raise awareness and provide numerous examples of giving back to the local communities. Should tourists simply keep their eyes shut?…….

Officials at California’s Yosemite National Parkare calling out an “all too familiar” sight — used toilet paper left behind by visitors.

National Park Service officials posted photos on Instagram on Monday that showed a pile of used toilet paper along with a full roll in a wilderness area near Rancheria Falls.

“Picture this: Yosemite’s majestic wilderness, stunning vistas, and... surprise! Used toilet paper waving hello near Rancheria Falls— a full roll too,” park officials wrote alongside the photos. “Unfortunately, this is a sight that’s become all too familiar in Yosemite, even in wilderness areas.”

Rangers are reminding visitors who bring toilet paper into the park to pack it back out with them when they leave.

“You can bring a sealable plastic baggie to stash it in, and even cover the bag in tape so you don’t have to look at it. Because really, nobody wants to stumble upon a surprise package left behind by an anonymous outdoor enthusiast,” park officials said.

Rangers also warned visitors not to bury their toilet paper, because “it’s easily exposed by weather and erosion, and animals can dig it up and disperse it long before it decomposes,” which officials said could take between one and three years.……

The results of living in a tourist destination. People living on the Gulf Coast can attest to this. But, what happens to the local economy when tourism dries up?
Currently on a train from Barcelona to Madrid. We spent four days in Barcelona and did not get the Super Soaker treatment. There are so many tourists there, I understand their frustration. A lot of the tourists are tied to the cruise industry. What sucks about that is that I think “cruisers” want all the amenities of home and aren’t necessarily interested in experiencing the local culture. We saw Burger Kings, Taco Bell, Five Guys, McDonalds, KFC, and a Popeyes. And they weren’t in non-tourist areas. There little signs everywhere that the local culture is bending knee to the almighty $/€. I don’t understand why people want to visit a place that they want to be like where the came from.

Authorities in Nevada asked the public for help finding two men seen on video damaging ancient rock formations at Lake Mead.

The video shows the two men shoving sandstone chunks over the edge of an outcropping as someone else screams. Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials say the incident took place near the Redstone Dune Trail on the north side of the lake. Park officials said the damage is irreparable.

John Haynes, a public information officer for the recreation area, told KVVU-TV of Las Vegas about the potentially heavy consequences to come for the two men.

"Destruction like this at federally protected sites can result in felony charges that come along with potential fines and jail time," Haynes said. "It’s one of my favorite places in the park, and they’re up there just destroying it. I don’t understand that."…….

CNN —
Two Henderson, Nevada, men have been indicted and are set to face trial for allegedly damaging ancient rock formations at Lake Mead.

Payden David Guy Cosper and Wyatt Clifford Fain were arraigned on Friday and both men pleaded not guilty to one count of injury and depredation of government property.

According to allegations in the indictment and a statement from the US Attorney’s Office, on April 7, 2024, the men pushed chunks of ancient rock formations over the edge of a cliff near the Redstone Dunes Trail at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, causing damage in excess of $1,000.

“There were no signs posted at the entrance prohibiting pushing rocks or that it was a federally a protected site,” said Ross Goodman, an attorney representing Cosper.

“Mr. Cosper did not have any knowledge that pushing a boulder was unlawful until the US Marshalls showed up [at] his house four months later,” Goodman said in a statement to CNN.…….

Nothing good ever comes from someone with 4 names. They usually end up assassinating someone.
