Authorities in Nevada asked the public for help finding two men seen on video damaging ancient rock formations at Lake Mead.

The video shows the two men shoving sandstone chunks over the edge of an outcropping as someone else screams. Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials say the incident took place near the Redstone Dune Trail on the north side of the lake. Park officials said the damage is irreparable.

John Haynes, a public information officer for the recreation area, told KVVU-TV of Las Vegas about the potentially heavy consequences to come for the two men.

"Destruction like this at federally protected sites can result in felony charges that come along with potential fines and jail time," Haynes said. "It’s one of my favorite places in the park, and they’re up there just destroying it. I don’t understand that."…….

CNN —
Two Henderson, Nevada, men have been indicted and are set to face trial for allegedly damaging ancient rock formations at Lake Mead.

Payden David Guy Cosper and Wyatt Clifford Fain were arraigned on Friday and both men pleaded not guilty to one count of injury and depredation of government property.

According to allegations in the indictment and a statement from the US Attorney’s Office, on April 7, 2024, the men pushed chunks of ancient rock formations over the edge of a cliff near the Redstone Dunes Trail at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, causing damage in excess of $1,000.

“There were no signs posted at the entrance prohibiting pushing rocks or that it was a federally a protected site,” said Ross Goodman, an attorney representing Cosper.

“Mr. Cosper did not have any knowledge that pushing a boulder was unlawful until the US Marshalls showed up [at] his house four months later,” Goodman said in a statement to CNN.…….

Nothing good ever comes from someone with 4 names. They usually end up assassinating someone.

Nevada parks officials will spend more than $8.5m addressing a boom in illegal roads at Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the public lands around the sprawling man-made reservoir above the Hoover Dam.

Officials have documented at least 824 miles of illegal roads in the recreation area, but suspect the true amount could be double that. The unpermitted development prompted officials to close the popular campsite Government Washin August.

“From an aerial platform, you see dozens and dozens of illegal roads that have been created... An incredible amount of damage that is occurring. We have an obligation to correct,” Trouper Snow, chief ranger of Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the time of the closure, told Fox 5 Vegas.……

Sometimes an azzzz whopping is justified.

Why is it always white people?
I realize this is months old, but I just can’t let it go.
In Feb 2007 I had to go to Hickam AFB for an aircraft rescue. While there I was able to go to the USS Arizona memorial. There were a lot of people going and about half were Japanese.
Inside the memorial there are signs in Japanese and English explaining the significance and telling people to be respectful. One Japanese man got a cell phone call and just started loudly talking to whoever was calling. Leaning against the wall while doing so.
It’s not always white people.

That’s a very emotional tour. I went several times while stationed there. I was always surprised at the large number of Japanese tourists there.

You sure he's Japanese and not Chinese? That behavior is very uncharacteristic of Japanese. Of course, he could have been Japanese/American.

A Yellowstone National Park tourist was sentenced to jail for getting too close to a famous geyser.

Angela Flaherty, 44, of Seattle, was sentenced to 7 days in jail after pleading guilty to coming within 10 feet onto the cone of Old Faithful, violating a federal law, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

The law requires “foot travel in all thermal areas and within the Yellowstone Canyon between the Upper Falls and Inspiration Point must be confined to boardwalks or trails that are maintained for such travel and are marked by official signs.”

Some of the Seattle woman’s conduct was captured on video, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Flaherty was also ordered to pay a $40 fee.

The 44-year-old isn’t the only visitor who has gotten too close to the attraction in recent years.

In July 2021, a 37-year-old man from Maine pleaded guilty to trespassing in the Old Faithful thermal area. He was sentenced to 15 days behind bars and fined $200. He was also banned from Yellowstone National Park.

Some others have been injured or worse as a result of nearing the thermal area.……

Two men caught on camera damaging ancient federally protected red rock sandstone formations now face jail time after being convicted of defacing a national park.

The pair, Wyatt Clifford Fain and Payden David Guy Cosper, were captured on camera last April shoving the iconic red rock sandstone formations at Nevada’s Lake Mead National Park, home to 140 million-year-old sand dunes. Video of their act went viral and drew quick condemnation.

A jury found each guilty of one count of injury and depredation of government property after a two-day trial, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. They face a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both.

They are both set to be sentenced on July 8.

After the men were indicted, Ross Goodman, an attorney representing Cosper, told CNN that there were no signs indicating the area was federally protected.

“There were no signs posted at the entrance prohibiting pushing rocks or that it was a federally protected site,” Goodman said. He added that his client “did not have any knowledge that pushing a boulder was unlawful until the U.S. Marshalls showed up [at] his house four months later.”……
