Pentagon Report on Saddam's Iraq Censored?

-->ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: The Bush Administration apparently does not want a U.S. military study that found no direct connection between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda to get any attention. This morning, the Pentagon cancelled plans to send out a press release announcing the report's release and will no longer make the report available online.

So I wonder why they would throw this line out there and then reel it back in?

Not something they want on the street with an election coming up. Look for it to be released early next year regardless of the election results. At this point there will be a lot of maneuvering to not give Democrats election year material and to not weaken McCain's Iraq position in the election.

Yeah, god forbid Americans get to make an educated choice..:9:

Everybody who thinks that this non-release of the report has anything to do that with little exchange of words between Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain over al-Qaeda in Iraq, raise your hand and say "w00t."

There has been many findings and much evidence supporting this from the very beggining. I am neither Republican or Democrat. I have lost faith in our government and election process long ago. I have become disgusted with everything I learned in grade school and high school, only to have it revealed as fiction in college. I view news and multimedia as the biggest weapon and propaganda machine out there. I have seen evidence years ago stating just what the findings were, and have seen the sheep or John Q. Public refuse to believe it and ostracize the people who spoke the truth. They would rather discredit the source than reevalute their beliefs concerning our government and our lifestyles and the results of both. I am not anti government or anti american, just simply stating that we should all stop buying the mantra, hook line and sinker, and wake up and take this country back, stop dumbing down our education system, and start a revolution of truth and accountability, starting with ourselves, our lifestyles, and the cost and compromises we have made in order to have instant gratification and remain passive rather than go through the mental sweat and take a stand for the beliefs we were founded on that have become so perversed over the years. We are not number 1 in anything except consumption. We have become lazy and self centered, and no longer question very much and give up the fight quickly becuase we have been conditioned to think it is an uphill battle that can not be won. The point is, we have been bold faced lied to, by this administration and many others, yet we refuse to do much about it in proportion to the crimes committed against our sovriengty both by the government and corporate America in the name of money. That is what this war was about, that is what every tax cut is about, that is what almost every peice of legislature is about, and as long as we can go to walmart and buy crap we really don't need, we don't care or even consider what we have given up to have that "freedom".

The problem is the majority of the population R christians and will vote 4 satan if he ends all his speeches with " GOD bless ameraca" (oops that's just how W. says it)
"God bless america"

The thing that gets me is why would the pentagon throw the line out there in the first place. They must have intially put the premise out publically for a reason before they withdrew it. Maybe they wanted to see the public response to the topic, I don't know. I mean this is a report that they created, if its political I don't get why they would go through the motion of putting something politically damaging out in the first place.

Why keep the report a secret? I mean, it only said there was no "operational" link.
No big deal.
Right?

I would imagine the administration doesn't want to give free ammo to the Dems in election season.

Exactly. And on the christian/god bless america comment, I have a few close friends who are VERY devout. 4 years ago they voted for whichever politician was prolife, pro sanctified marriage, ect. I got them to do research and examine evidence out there, instead of shooting and discredit the messenger without even judging wether or not it is possible he is speaking the truth. After many hours and days of prodding and arguing and flat out saying that If I were running for office, and knew that by simply saying I supported god in school or whatever issue people seem to think is important, I will get their vote. It doesn't matter if I do not lead a christian life, if I am the most arrogant, prideful, opposite of Jesus and everything Jesus taught. The fact is politicians take issues that have very little bearing on their office, like same sex marraige or prolife/prochoice, and make it a main political platform. The public is so polarized-- choose one side or the other or else, that they lose focus on how this person got into a postion of power, what merits this person has, what good this person has accomplished, what organizations this person is connected to, what other rich people this person shares money with, what laws this person has passed, and what good this person will or will not do concerning issues that truly affect us, like medical care, job security, retirement and pensions== not 401 k, the taking over of the world by corporations, the dumbing down of the school system, the tax laws of the past 35 years that have benefited specifically the top one percent of american household incomes, and every other issue that affects each and every one of us who does not have a net worth of over 100 million.

Everything is a dog and pony show. Almost every President, no matter the party or which house or senate was which party, every tax law and almost every business law passed over the last 40 years has benefited only one class, the super elite. There are many books in almost every library across the nation with definate proof of this. Congressional hearings can also be found at the libraries. The fact is whe have been controlled and manipulated through the multimedia for over a hundred years, our education system has been dumbed down by congress, and we are mentally lazy to do anything other than follow the flock. We call ourselves free, in the most free country, but we have freely given away most of our freedoms, especially freedom of thought, without a communist takeover. The new communism is removing God from everything, making our children stupider by the generation, making us a Utilitarian society-- key word utilize-- in every aspect from casual sex to computers to any service our product we can buy. We are free to do all this, but we have lost so much more. We do not hold our government accountable. Our representatives do not represent our best interests. The system is corrupt to its core, and everything about it is designed to stay that way thanks to our great legal system and brainwashing machine, the most powerful weapon, the multimedia. We will be glady asking for socialism before it is all said and done. The only way out of this is another American Revolution, and that will never happen until it is too late.

By the way, I am an Orsen Wells fan. As well as Ray Bradbury, CS Lewis, Pope John Paul II, Jesus, Aristotle, or anyone who challenges me to think.

Interesting documents came out last week from the Institute For Defense Analysis. Titled: "Iraqi Perspectives Project- Saddam and Terrorism: Emerging Insights from Captured Iraqi Documents".

It's a 94 page report (pdf link to the report via ABC News website is at the bottom of the post) that is derived from translations from Saddam's captured papers. I guess the Saddam ties to al Qaeda that has been debated boils down to how narrowly one wants to define al Qaeda. Per the report, Saddam apparently had very direct ties to Zawahiri's Islamic Jihad, which is the organization that merged with al Qaeda, and now comprises roughly 2/3 of al Qaeda.

Saddam, the terrorist's friend | The Australian

Saddam, the terrorist's friend

Newly published Iraqi documents reveal just how extensive Saddam's involvement with international terrorism was. The summary of these documents, published under the heading Saddam and Terrorism, has been reported across the world and read by almost no one.Its first paragraph reads: "The Iraqi Perspectives Project review of captured Iraqi documents uncovered strong evidence that links the regime of Saddam Hussein to regional and global terrorism. Despite their incompatible long-term goals, many terrorist movements and Saddam found a common enemy in the US.

"At times these organisations worked together, trading access for capability. In the period after the 1991 Gulf War, the regime of Saddam Hussein supported a complex and increasingly disparate mix of pan-Arab revolutionary causes and emerging pan-Islamic radical movements."

The world was misled about this report because of the focus on one single sentence of the report, which said: "This study found no smoking gun (that is, a direct connection) between Saddam's Iraq and al-Qa'ida."

However, the report does portray a vast network of Iraqi support for terrorist organisations that includes numerous groups the report identifies as "part of al-Qa'ida". The misleading and declaratory sentence presumably refers only to Osama bin Laden and al-Qa'ida central itself. For example, the report states: "Captured documents reveal that the regime (of Saddam) was willing to co-opt or support organisations it knew to be part of al-Qa'ida, as long as that organisation's near-term goals supported Saddam's long-term vision." This included, for example, Saddam providing financial support for Egyptian Islamic Jihad, led by Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's deputy.

Acknowledging this support, but saying there's no smoking gun directly to al-Qa'ida itself, means the report is taking an incredibly restrictive and precise view of al-Qa'ida.

But in any event this report is not claiming, as wrongly reported in the wires, that there was no link with al-Qa'ida, merely that it found no absolute smoking gun in the translated documents.

Wake up America: Saddam and Terrorism: Emerging Insights from Captured Iraqi Documents

#1. The Iraqi regime was involved in regional and international terrorist operations prior to Operation Iraqi Freedom. The predominant targets of Iraqi state terror operations were Iraqi citizens, both inside and outside of Iraq.

#2. On occasion, the Iraqi intelligence services directly targeted the regime's perceived enemies, including non-Iraqis. Non-Iraqi casualties often resulted from Iraqi sponsorship of non-governmental terrorist groups.

#3. Saddam's regime often cooperated directly, albeit cautiously, with terrorist groups when they believed such groups could help advance Iraq's long-term goals. The regime carefully recorded its connections to Palestinian terror organizations in numerous government memos. One such example documents Iraqi financial support to families of suicide bombers in Gaza and the West Bank.

#4. State sponsorship of terrorism became such a routine tool of state power that Iraq developed elaborate bureaucratic processes to monitor progress and accountability in the recruiting, training, and resourcing of terrorists. Examples include the regime's development, construction, certification, and training for car bombs and suicide vests in 1999 and 2000.

Documents indicate that the Saddam's regime's use of terrorism was standard practice, although not always successful.

From 1991 through 2003, the Saddam regime regarded inspiring, sponsoring, directing, and executing acts of terrorism as an element of state power.

On Page #21, the report discusses Saddam's use of terror as an instrument of state power.

By page #23, an extract from a captured document from July of 2002, is presented, which is a response from the Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS) to a letter from Saddam asking for a list of weapons available in Iraqi embassies overseas.

I read this whole post and concluded that this "new" information is nothing more than an elaborate spin to somehow connect Hussein in a very elaborate fashion to Al-Queda.

So Hussein had ties to Zawahiri's Islamic Jihad, which eventually merged with Al-Queda. Further, this part of the post is key:

"Captured documents reveal that the regime (of Saddam) was willing to co-opt or support organisations it knew to be part of al-Qa'ida, as long as that organisation's near-term goals supported Saddam's long-term vision." This included, for example, Saddam providing financial support for Egyptian Islamic Jihad, led by Ayman al-Zawahiri, bin Laden's deputy."

So in other words, Hussein might have been willing to cooperate more with Al-Queda on his terms.

Okay.
