It’s all about texture to me. If it tastes like chicken and I can fry it meh. Gotta die from something. Might as well be this. I mean if you think about it, isn’t this just the evolution of chicken? We had real chicken, then nuggets made from “parts” of chicken and now this. Pass the gravy and God bless this meal I am about to receive!
hell, its probably better than what they pass off as chicken nuggets and chicken patties int he frozen food section..

For the first time, U.S. regulators on Wednesday approved the sale of chicken made from animal cells, allowing two California companies to offer “lab-grown” meat to the nation’s restaurant tables and eventually, supermarket shelves.

The Agriculture Department gave the green light to Upside Foods and Good Meat, firms that had been racing to be the first in the U.S. to sell meat that doesn’t come from slaughtered animals — what’s now being referred to as “cell-cultivated” or “cultured” meat as it emerges from the laboratory and arrives on dinner plates.

The move launches a new era of meat production aimed at eliminating harm to animals and drastically reducing the environmental impacts of grazing, growing feed for animals and animal waste.

“Instead of all of that land and all of that water that’s used to feed all of these animals that are slaughtered, we can do it in a different way,” said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and chief executive of Eat Just, which operates Good Meat…….

I think it’s a bit more than that

1. Has to taste good

2. Had to taste like what it’s supposed to taste like. If the lab grown beef is good but doesn’t taste like beef that’s a hard sell

3. Cost. It can’t be much more than regular meat. If it tastes good, tastes like beef but is ten times the cost of the same amount of beef that’s a no go

4. Be prepared for backlash. If this starts to take off in any real way get ready for the inevitable propaganda. Outlawing hamburgers, against the American beef industry, putting the hard working ranchers and farmers who’ve fed American families for generations out of work

Yeah, this is true... particularly 3.

I am generally sympathetic to animal cruelty arguments, and try to buy from a local butcher that works with local farms that are not industrial farming -- but it's so freaking expensive.

4 is going to be the tough one I think. How much land in the US is tied up in cattle farming, pig farming and chicken farming. I would also add how much disease? They killed millions of chickens from the bird flu not that long ago.
 
I tested out Beyond Meat "beef" with the kids the other day (2 and 5). Hoping to give them alternatives when they find out all their favorite foods come from their favorite animal.

They both spit it out. The 5 yr old was particularly offended by it. And its not like they are just used to one kind of meat. I've given them venison, boar, buffalo, and elk unbeknownst to them.

I think it tastes pretty good, but it still doesn't taste like real meat.
 
4 is going to be the tough one I think. How much land in the US is tied up in cattle farming, pig farming and chicken farming. I would also add how much disease? They killed millions of chickens from the bird flu not that long ago.
Well, yeah. Diseases certainly couldn’t originate or propagate in a lab.

When I tried Burger King’s impossible burger I thought it was okay.

it was different than a normal Whopper (those who said it tasted identical are lying), but it wasn’t bad. Not like a veggie or bean burger that obviously isn’t meat, it did taste like a burger l, not bad, certainly not great but a real burger.

I’ve definitely had worse real beef burgers

Was that the "beef" chunks or the burger style? We weren't fans of the chunk style, but we absolutely love the burger style. I can make it impossible to tell the difference in burgers, meatballs, shepherd's pie, etc.

I'm sure that Big Meat will lobby the politicians hard on this, if they already aren't.
