For all the people who say we should draft Mendenhall... (1 Viewer)

What I'm not understanding is why in the world would we go RB with the #10 pick? This draft is LOADED with talent in the third round and since we don't have a fourth, I see no reason why one wouldn't drop to the fifth round. I mean, there are PROVEN RBs out there who can't find work right now. There are only so many spots for the 32 teams and with this draft class being the way it is and the FA RB's not getting much of a bite, I see no reason to draft a RB in the first or second round.

I'd prefer we go for a heavy duty mauller type. We've got a quick and elusive Bush, a nice third down back in Stecker....where Bush can fill in also....and we've got PT who can have a few carries on first and second down. I'd like to see us go after a bigger back who can be put in early and often to wear a defense down, pound it down their throats and make our other guys (Bush, Stecker, PT) have a tired defense to work with later in the game. A RB that doesn't have to have 4.3 speed. I'd rather someone who comes in at the 225-240lb mark and has an attitude of busting a DT in the mouth! McFadden is going to be a great back....but not the back that we "need." We've got Bush and Payton is still trying to figure out how to use him. Let's stick with what we know.....get a pounder in there and make the defense put 8 in the box, so Brees can light it up down the field with Colston and Co.

Dallas will trade up before it gets too us, if he falls to ten we probably won't get offered what people expect us too. Its not as easy to trade down as people think. I'm just hoping for Dorsey/Ellis and a CB in the 2nd, pressure on the QB takes the pressure off our corners. Its just the way football works.

Just to clear this up i really don't want mendenhall, wouldn't hate McFadden (guy is just incredible). I am just saying that i would some what understand picking a RB at #10 not agree...but understand.

Like I said in onother thread, the Saints can not put a running back in just because he can run. He has to be able to pick up the blitz just as well. We pass more than we run. The Steelers backs can be one dimentional because the run a lot more than they pass.

If a back canot pick up the blitz he cannot play for us.

Nice pictures, now why did P Thomas back up Mendenhall in college? I like P. Thomas, but please people he had one good game and has looked very promising, but he is not Deuce, he has not proved that he can fill that role and that is why some on this board wouldn't be mad if we went RB in the first. As for him being the first to go 100/100 when your the 4th string back...Deuce, Bush, Stecker, then Thomas...gets the starting Nod teams begin to focus on Brees and Colston a little bit more. Now that teams have sufficient film on Thomas it could be a little tougher to duplicate those numbers. I like Thomas, but i need to see more than just a game or two of real playing time before i am comfortable handing him the starting job. Regardless we have no control over who we draft and more than likely have no clue who we will draft, only the coaching staff knows this and they don't tell the media who it will be before the draft.(Except maybe the #1 pick)

1. Thomas didn't backup Mendenhall in College; they were a committee with Pierre taking the bulk of the carries.
2. So you DO admit that, by needing to see more of him, that he has AT LEAST earned the right to play more, rather than just bring in a rookie and hand him a job that, up to now, he hasn't given any reason he doesn't deserve?

There's no saying that Pierre is going to be a superstar, but he DID "earn it" last year, for what he was asked to do. He at least deserves another year to prove that he can play.

I am for us drafting defense...but I can see Payton going with Mendenhall or DMC. When it comes to the Saints, its best not to get attached to a good draft choice.

If we draft Mendenhall it proves Payton only cares about offense and he should just cut all defensive players making above league minimum and try to win games 60 - 50. We have 4 running backs who could be effective as starters and lots of other holes.
