It was the 80s back before binge drinking was bad. Serious peer pressure though to the point where folks would rather piss themselves than double the price of beer for everyone. Not sure why the post about breaking the seal every 10 minutes triggered these memories and in some cases lack of memories, but it is early and for whatever reason I thought I would ask.
It’s more that I went to a LOT of drink specials in the 80s and don’t remember anything like this
(Obviously ‘not remembering’ is a grain of salt situation, but still)

I asked my boss at one my first jobs if I could work through the day and 'take' lunch at the end and just leave for the day

Never got a good answer as to why I couldn't

Also never got a good answer as to why the smokers got 10 minutes each hour to smoke but as a non smoker I couldn't just take a 10 minute break each hour

We used to be able to do this. it wasn't something we allowed everyday, but if you needed to leave early or come in 30 minutes late for a reason. We didn't have to clock out for lunch, and it automatically took out 30 minutes for lunch. I had to put in a code for no lunch that day. It was a benefit, but it would become a pain if people tried to take advantage of it too much. But with the new company we work for (life of a contractor) doesn't have that option for me to do that. it sucks, but...
I had a someone complain about another co worker because sometimes they would watch some videos online, and when i said whats the difference in that and you smoking 10 times a day? "well, i mean, i don't usually do that" and talked around it, and hadn't brought it up since..lol
