that's very sad. I would expect someone who has never been married/never had a daughter/never had a girlfriend maybe to not know, but if you had any of the three, shame on you if you do not know.

In today's time certainly true. Back then it was still treated as a social taboo. NASA engineers at that time were likely products of the 40's-50's.

It's a relatively new concept to admit that women have biological processes which do not require shaming and secrecy.
