There is no mystery target. The Saints never contacted Romeo Crennel for a interview once Rob Ryan became available. Romeo was there #1 choice before Rob Ryan became available. If you remember, the day after we fired Spags is when the Rams announced they hired Rob Ryan as their DC. A few days later Rams announced Ryan would no longer be hired as DC because of scheme fit and also the Rams wanted to hold on to their assistant coaches and Rob Ryan wanted to bring his guys. I would not even be suprised if Sean Payton called Rob Ryan that weekend and told him he was his number 1 choice and would allow him to bring his own guys and that might have given Rob Ryan even more reason to not take the Rams gig.

So we are going to implement a 3-4 defense with Joe Vitt and crew that have little to know experience teaching a 3-4 defense? That would be suicide. Any coach we hire to implement the 3-4 better have a strong staff of assistants he will be bringing with him or he will not be offered the job. Part of the reason why Rob Ryan was probably the #1 choice was because of his ability to bring strong assistant coaches that know the 3-4 with him.

I would think Payton called Grantham and told him to withdraw because he wasn't getting the job. It's more important in college to be "committed" than it is in the NFL.

If what I'm thinking is correct that means they have decided on Ryan. But maybe I'm off base.

Vitt has been a secondary coach for the Packers, Rams & Seahawks. That position is open right now for the Saints. But many teams that run the 3-4 use 2 linebacker coaches.
