Had to say goodbye to my dog today (2 Viewers)

Very sorry for your loss there @Mr. Blue Sky ... My wife and I have a 10 year old basset hound and a 10 year old chihuahua-dachshund mix and the thought that we're nearer to the end than the beginning of this journey all together definitely messes me up when I think about it.

Hell, I definitely did not make it through this thread emotionally unscathed.

My advice fwiw, dont think about it for long.. becuase no matter how much you worry about that eventual day, or how anxious you get about it- it wont suck any less when that day actually comes.. Just enjoy the everloving hell out of them while youve got them.. id do just about anything for one more cuddle with my baby boy .

MBS, I'm very sorry that you've lost your friend. It's a sting that's unique, much different than losing a person in your life.
He was clearly a happy little champ and you were a loving parent.
It's been about 2 months since we decided to let our 13 year old cat go. The decision to go forward with it was the hardest part, it took us about 6 months to decide. We were very blessed to have our vet come to our home for her.

I hope this is a bit of solace as you move forward, I have had cats all my life and all but 2 of them were lost through an accident or disappearance. Those losses were by far the most painful, much more so than deciding for them and being there. We miss her very much but are at peace.

Here's to Dreux giving Skim Cat a hard time and having lots of pals in their new life.

My boy was fearless, and wasnt afraid of hardly anything.. except kitty cats haha.. jsut saying the words “kitty cat” made his ears droop a little.. I hope your girl can help him get over that .

They're never with us long enough. I can't type this without getting teared up. My 9y/o Lab developed cancer and had to be let go. We all cried as we said our good byes. After it was over we left the room and went outside. I remembered that I had left my phone inside and went back in to get it and I find the vet on the floor with her crying and petting her, telling her goodbye. I miss my girl everyday but I'm thankful for the time she was with us and for having such a loving and caring Vet.

I kept apologizing to the vet b/c i was such a disaster and it was so sudden- but of course i realized they probably see this everyday.. still , they were very patient and understanding .. and i also boarding him there sometimes when i went out of town so a lot of the vet techs and stuff seemed to be broken up about Brees .

I just realized I didn't mention the name of the movie....it was A Dog's Purpose

I saw it .. and yeah, probably wont see it again.. same with Marley and Me.. although i have watched Hachi A Dog’s Tale many times, probably against my better judgement, and it’s a favorite movie of mine .. i highly recommend it, b/c even though you’ll bawl like a little schoolgirl with a skinned knee- it’s totally worth it for all the reminders of how amazing and loyal these animals truly are .

Um, well... He may want to steer clear, most people speak about how loving and loyal their pets are, Skim Cat was a grade A birch. We loved her like crazy of course, but we're weird I guess.
Her last word was a little hiss and that's the thing that really turned on the waterworks for me. Who knows though, maybe she's turned over a new leaf.
Can't see to type now...

I'm so sorry for your loss.

A person much smarter than me once said that getting a pet is knowingly and willingly acquiring a small tragedy. They will fill your life until their demise.

Their loss is so profound.

We had to put our 13 yo cat down last week. My 14 yo daughter was crushed. She named her Baby and she slept together.

Our 12 yo old lab is not walking well and hasn't chased a ball in over a year. Her organs are fine but she can't hardly get up from all the damage she did to herself by chasing balls, birds, squirrels etc. with reckless abandon. She has torn up knees and bad arthritis.

We talk a lot about when is the right time. She still can go outside and goes on a walk a day so we are letting her rest most of the day.

It's incredibly hard. But Letting them go is the best thing you can do for them. It is the unselfish choice.

Now they are all running together, free of pain and suffering. Waiting for us to come home.

It's crazy. I believe more in Dog Heaven than I do for humans. They deserve it so much more.
Did you ever see that video where the guy would take his dog and hold her in the water everyday to take the pressure off her aches and pains. It’s uplifting and sad all at once.

When I was a kid we had to read Where the Red Fern grows…. Man I remember it being my turn to read and I could barely see the damn book because of the tears in my eyes. I got picked on a bit after that but hard to forget that story about Dan and Little Anne.

Damn, my friend I'm sorry for your loss. You helped him lead a great life. Thank you for that. Rescues are a relationship that makes us greater than the sum of our parts. I just rescued an older stray cat this summer and we're both better for it :)

Love pet pics. When my best friend Booda died it was devastating for me. More so than any loss I can recall. It took me few years to final another friend. I know what the future holds and I will let future me deal with that. In the meantime I take boat loads of pics and I spoil the heck out of him.

This thread has me wanting to adopt another rescue 🥹

That picture of him in the chair with the beer is great. It's amazing how much personality and love can fit in such a little package.

Even though I haven't had a pet since I was a teenager, I know how special the bond is with them, so I am truly sorry for your loss and know how hard it is right now. Take comfort in knowing how you did rescue him, take care of him, and you received unconditional love in return. I hope that you find another fur baby in the future to have a similar relationship with, but not replace what you had with Brees...
