Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. is close to a deal for a new online TV series based on Harry Potter, the best-selling young adult books, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

Each season of the series will be based on one of JK Rowling’s seven books, said the people, who asked not to be identified since the deal hasn’t been announced, suggesting years of fresh fare from the popular stories.

The company is hoping the series can be one cornerstone of a new streaming strategy that will be announced next week by HBO’s parent, Warner Bros. That company’s chief executive officer, David Zaslav, and HBO chief Casey Bloys have worked to convince Rowling to produce a new series, but the deal hasn’t been completed.

The series would allow the writers to delve further into the world of Rowling’s books, many of which are longer than 500 pages. Warner Bros. previously turned each of the seven books into a hit movie, culminating in a two-part film based on the final installment…….

……“It’s something we’ve been saying should happen for a long time,” said 30-year-old Sofia Correa, who was visiting London from Spain with her husband and baby.

She added: “A TV series could include everything from the books that was left out of the movies. For example, in the books Ron is really smart, he’s an amazing wizard, and in the movies he seems like an idiot. Ginny also developed a great personality in the books after growing up with six brothers, but in the films she’s kind of lame. If you had one episode per chapter of a book, you could have all the details that were missing.”

Similarly, Noelle Alcom, 31, who was visiting from San Diego, said a TV series would be an opportunity to stay more true to the books. “Peeves was so funny in the books but he was completely left out of the films. In Goblet of Fire, there was so much that would have been cool to show in the movies which they never did. They also didn’t include any of Dudley’s redeeming qualities. They could get a lot of those details in.”

“I’m very excited because it gives a chance for my generation to enjoy Harry Potter in a new way,” said 19-year-old Simon Hippenstial from Berlin, who was in a long queue snaking around the Harry Potter gift shop. “It could also introduce the books to new fans – it will open up a new world to so many people and change their minds.”

He added: “I think it’s really important that they ask the fans what they’d like to see. I’m hoping it will tell a different story to the films. I’d like more about Voldemort and his backstory, building on the information we got in The Half-Blood Prince.”…….

tbh, I’ve always kinda wanted something like this … but not this
I don’t just want the parts of the books excised or combined from the books; I’d rather our trio fade into the background a bit and see this whole story from other characters’ perspectives
Like imagine Goblet told mostly from Cho’s pov
Or a season focused primarily on quidditch and all the weird stuff is background
Or what about hermoine’s muggle parents dealing with having a magical kid

Oh well

That would be cool but the movies left soooo much out that hasn't been brought to life. It would feel like these other angles, while very interesting, sorta skipped the line. There's book canon that's integral to the plot that wasn't touched at all in the movies. Seems wrong to ignore that while pursuing plots that would be basically new material much like Wicked does for the Wizard of Oz. The difference here though is the Wizard of Oz story had been told completely in stage or film by the time Wicked made its debut.

The movies were great but they suffered from being started before the ending was known (not as badly as GoT for sure, but still). The filmmakers didn't know Jenny Weasley would be an important character or that they were giving us the first glimpses of horcruxes. I'm excited to see the details that can be put into a fully known world. A world where fantastic beasts have been fleshed out and known former Death Eaters are real characters from the start.

I would love to see a series about the founding of Hogwarts or one set in one of the world's other wizarding schools, or the first Tri Wizard Tournament

Or something set outside of a school, a series about a group of Aurors

I’d love all of that
It’s really such a rich world that’s it’s a shame they’re retelling the same story (and that they’re pooping the bed so hard with fantastic beasts)

is she gonna be trans?
They probably won’t go that far, but they’re definitely going to make a lot of the subtext text (in terms of identity, sexuality, etc)
I also feel pretty sure they’ll ‘address’ issues with house elves and goblins

Broadly, as Bud Light is the latest to demonstrate, brands realize that provoking the ‘anti-woke’ crowd is a win win
It’s free publicity, they don’t have the numbers for an effective boycott, and they galvanize the sentiments of sentient folk
