How do I start a grass cutting service??

I was a small engine mechanic for many many years. I did all the major repairs for the MS state park system for many of those years. Here's my advice:

Start with the best equipment you can afford. My advice for mowers would be:
#1: Skag
#2: Exmark

Weed eaters and blowers:
#1: Echo
#2: Stihl

Preventive maintenance is of utmost importance, should be performed DAILY.

1,000 is alot of flyers. Maybe think about printing a few hundred flyers and getting business cards. Flyers get thrown away and get mixed up in junk more than a business card would. Maybe make your flyer 1/2 of an 8.5 x 11 page so that you get 2 for the price of one sheet, saves costs and makes it a different size from every other piece of paper.

After you cut them in half, cut out a hole in the top
and hang them on peoples doorknobs.

Also, whenever you see another lawn care service, ask them
for their yards they don't like doing. I have a couple friends
that did it this way and got a lot of work from it.

I work full time and I'm only looking to profit about $500 a month. I already have a couple of cheap mowers and a cheap weed eater. So I already have everything I need to get started and if buiness it picks up I can invest in some better equipment. All I need is a few yards to get started. Do you think its too early to start advertising in February.

I'm not familiar with Echo but I can tell you through experience that Shindaiwa trimmers are junk compared to Stihl. I also have Scagg mowers. We don't cut lawns for home and business but we do cut an awe full lot of grass.

I agree about Shindaiwa's trimmers. Stihl makes the best hedge trimmers and chain saws but I will take a Shindaiwa weed eater over any thing. My dad has a landscape business and cuts 80 yards a week. He has two Shindaiwa weed eaters purchased in 1992 that just wont die. He bought a Shindaiwa hedge trimmer and quickly realized that they should stick to weed eaters.

I think it is a little early to start advertising but it certainly isnt too early to book advertising for March.

I wrote trimmer but I did mean weed eater as you put it . Weed Eater as you know is just a brand name for a weed trimmer. My experience has been different and we don't cut yards we cut really rough terrain but to each his own. We cut with blades not string and most times the gas trigger pulled all the way the entire day or more of cutting. In these same conditions the Shindaiwa would come apart due to vibration....seriously just come apart but like I said to each their own. I would never recomend any Shindaiwa product for commercial use. NO! I do not work for Stihl :hihi:

fyi - General liability for your line of work runs about $700 annual for $100,000 (w/ $500 deductible ). May be more depending on number of employees. ( that was basically just on you as owner/operator ). Also check on your auto. Your auto insurance co may exclude "Business use " on your vehicle especially if you put signage on the vehicle.

I was bushhoggin my "greenspace" and used a Stihl w/ metal blade attachments and I was trimming trees up to 3" in diameter! Ripped everything ins site and didnt miss a step. It was the straight one- not curved, and a bit heavier, but it ate it all up.

Find a horticulurist who goes to peoples homes and prune thier flowers, brushes..etc and exchange cards with them. He will take 20 or so of your cards and you grab 20 of his. After you mow someones lawn, tell them you know a guy who can make thier flowers look beatuiful and the flower dude will tell them he knows a guy that could cut the grass for his clients too...

Help yourselves by helping each other.

How do you start a grass cutting service"?

First of all, you find a place to grow your "grass". You know, somewhere where the cops wont see you.

Next, you plant the seeds, then water them... Repeat over and over....

Once the grass is at the right height (ohh approximately chest high... Not that I would know).... Then that's when it's time to cut.
