How good was Carr in his first start as a Saint? (1 Viewer)

Funny how that works. QB play goes hand and hand with protection

Sometimes, but not always hand and hand. Depends on the QB, some have better pocket awareness, make quicker decisions and can get out of trouble with their scrambling ability.....fractions of a second make a difference....it's not quite that simple.....

I know it's not Carr's fault, but the red zone offense needs to work on some good routes and plays. We choked a lot there, seeming due to poor design.
What was poorly designed? I’m interested in know the schematic issues you identified with the redzone offense?

Half the time the protection broke down and Carr got sacked. We lost a TD due to the Refs incompetency ruling Shaheed's TD incomplete and lost a red zone opportunity when the refs didn't called a PI on Olave's deep ball. Carr wasn't perfect but the play calls were good for the most part. The protection was the biggest issue. I'd be more concerned if Carr had 5 seconds and had no one open.

No chipping on the ends.

First possession in the red zone started at the 11, We ran Williams for 3 yards and then tried to pass twice. Carr was under duress both passes, as Penning was beat badly on both plays.

We should have had a TE or RB help him.

Second Possession was the shaeed no touchdown catch.

We challenged that play and when the ruling was upheld, the team was flat and deflated. The Titans Defense ran consecutive stunts and got pressure on Carr up the middle, the 3rd down was the "fumble" incomplete pass situation.

3rd Possession in the red zone we got the Shaeed TD.

4th possession in red zone we got the kneel down for the win.

I don't like that we are not in more of a max protect, or are we running screens while in the red zone, but all things considered, I didn't think we did bad in the Red Zone.

None of that is design… that’s execution.

They didn’t design the offense with the assumption that Penning and most of the Oline would get destroyed.

The design was good, the execution… not so much

The protection during the first possession was fine even when we were in the red zone. The Titans covered it well. Carr had enough time to survey the field on both passing downs. I didn't see any reason to use max protect in the first possession.

Yes! That was my point… it wasn’t poor design, it’s was poor execution, particularly by the Oline and more specifically, Penning… who I love, BTW…

I think max protect is likely rare in that area of the field anyway, the plays shouldn't take that long to develop on such a short field. The Titans never sent more than four rushers in the red zone anyway, so we need our OL to be able to handle that with a chip at most.

Did anyone else notice that Penning wasn't the worst rated O-lineman, by a pretty good margin?
If you’re referring to PFF (just asking), their rating system is not built for exceptionally good or bad plays, rather for consistency. They rate +, =, - each play. This means that when Penning gets his QB awfully sacked, he gets a - even when it should be a - - - - or whatever. This explains why a disastrous game by Penning could be rated higher than a mediocre game by Ruiz
